Beyond drama, he was known for satire. He published satirical works under his own name. He also used the collaborative pen name Kozma Prutkov. This character was a petty bureaucrat used to parody social life.

Tolstoy's literary journey began with his family influences. His uncle, Antony Pogorelsky, was a writer and his primary tutor. Under Pogorelsky, Aleksey developed an early interest in poetry. He began writing poems as early as 1823. He was inspired by old books found at home. His education was quite extensive from a young age. By the age of six, he was fluent in French, German, and English. He later added Italian to his linguistic skills.

During a trip to Germany in 1827, he met the famous writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe gave the young boy a fragment of a mammoth tusk. The tusk featured a drawing of a frigate.

Before dedicating himself to literature, Tolstoy held several official roles. In 1834, he enrolled as a student in the Moscow Foreign Ministry State Archive. This position gave him direct experience with historical documents. In December 1835, he passed exams at the University of Moscow. These exams covered Latin, literature, and Russian statistics, among other subjects. He then worked in the Economic Affairs and Statistics Department in Saint Petersburg. He also served as a diplomat for the Russian Embassy in Frankfurt starting in 1837. During the Crimean War, he served as an infantry major.

Tolstoy's social life was as active as his professional life. In the 1840s, he moved through high society with great energy. His life included salon parties, balls, and many pleasure trips. He also had a deep passion for hunting. He described himself as a "bear-hunter" due to his frequent trips into the forest. He claimed this upbeat hunting lifestyle actually affected his poetry. Physically, he was noted for his immense strength. People remarked that he could bend horse-shoes and drive nails into walls with one finger.

His writing career saw several distinct stages and styles. He first debuted as a prose writer rather than a poet. In 1841, he published the novella "The Vampire" under the name "Krasnorogsky." This work combined elements of horror with political satire. He also wrote "gothic" novellas like "The Family of the Vourdalak." These works showed an interest in the macabre. Later, he transitioned into his most famous role as a historical playwright. He eventually left his state service in the early 1860s to focus entirely on writing.

Tolstoy was part of a very famous Russian lineage. He was a member of the Tolstoy family and a second cousin to Leo Tolstoy.
