Aldrich Ames was an American officer for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The CIA is a government group that protects United States secrets.

Ames became a spy for the Soviet Union and Russia. This act is known as espionage. His actions caused great harm to the United States intelligence community. He was responsible for the loss of many secret sources. At the time of his arrest, he had compromised more highly classified assets than almost any other officer. His betrayal changed how the CIA understood its own security.

Ames grew up in a family connected to the intelligence world. His father, Carleton Cecil Ames, worked for the CIA's Directorate of Operations.

Because of his father's job, Aldrich worked summer jobs at the CIA as a teenager. He performed tasks like marking classified documents for filing. He also made fake money for training programs at "the Farm." After high school, he attended the University of Chicago. He studied history and foreign cultures, but he did not finish his degree. He was very interested in theater instead.

Ames's career at the CIA moved through several different stages and locations. He first worked in Ankara, Turkey, where his job was to find Soviet intelligence officers. He successfully recruited members of a local organization, but his superiors felt he was unsuited for field work. He then returned to CIA headquarters in the Soviet-East European Division. In 1976, he moved to New York City. There, he handled important Soviet assets, including a high-ranking official who defected to the West. Later, he was posted to Mexico City. His performance in Mexico was described as mediocre, and he faced issues with heavy drinking.

In 1983, Ames moved back to CIA headquarters for a very sensitive role. He joined the Southeast Asia division, which was part of the Department of Operations. This role was responsible for Soviet counterintelligence. This means his job was to watch the Soviet Union's intelligence activities. Because of this position, Ames had access to almost all CIA plans. He could see the most private secrets regarding the KGB and the GRU. The GRU is the Soviet military intelligence agency. This high level of access made his later decisions even more dangerous.

Financial pressure drove Ames to begin his espionage in April 1985. He had recently gone through a divorce that cost him about $46,000. His new wife, María del Rosario Casas Dupuy, was also a heavy spender. She spent about $5,000 every month on shopping and calls to Colombia.

To solve his money problems, Ames began selling secrets to the Soviets. He started with small information to prove he was a reliable insider. He asked for $50,000 for this first deal, and the Soviets paid him. He later said that once he crossed this line, he felt he could never go back.

Ames used specific methods to communicate with his handlers. He met with a contact named Sergey Dmitriyevich Chuvakhin at the Soviet embassy.

He also used a special mailbox to signal the Soviets. He would place a horizontal chalk mark above the United States Postal Service logo on a specific mailbox. This mark told the Soviets that he needed a meeting. For these meetings, he received between $20,000 and $50,000 at a time. When investigators later searched his home, they found many luxury items. They found six Rolex watches and hundreds of expensive items like designer dresses and many pairs of shoes.

The impact of his spying was devastating for the United States. Ames identified more than ten top-level CIA and FBI sources. These people were working secretly to help the U.S. government. Because Ames gave their names to the Soviets, many of these people were arrested. Some of them were eventually executed.

The CIA noticed that their network of agents was disappearing very quickly. At first, they did not realize there was a mole inside their own agency. They thought their codes might be broken or that they were being bugged. It took time to realize that one person was responsible for the loss of so many lives and secrets.

Ames was finally caught by the FBI in 1994. He was convicted of espionage and sentenced to life in prison. He was not allowed to be released on parole. He spent many years in various federal prisons.

Ames died in January 2026 at a federal prison in Maryland. His case is often studied alongside that of Robert Hanssen, another FBI agent who was also a spy. Both men were recruited by the same high-ranking KGB officer named Victor Cherkashin. Their stories show how much damage a single person can do to a national security system.
