As a statesman, he guided Italy through its most difficult transitions. He founded the Christian Democracy party, known in Italian as Democrazia Cristiana (DC). This party would dominate the Italian Parliament for many decades. De Gasperi served as the prime minister of Italy from 1945 to 1953. During these eight years, he led eight successive coalition governments. His long tenure is a landmark of political longevity in modern Italy. He was also a founding father of what is now the European Union.

De Gasperi's early life was shaped by the complex borders of Europe. He was born in 1881 in Pieve Tesino, located in the Tyrol region. At that time, Tyrol was part of the Austria-Hungary empire. His father was a local police officer with limited financial resources. De Gasperi studied literature and philosophy at a university in Vienna. In 1904, he participated in student demonstrations to support Italian-language universities. This activism led to a twenty-day imprisonment during a university inauguration in Innsbruck. He eventually earned a degree in philology, which is the study of language.

As an editor for newspapers like Il Trentino, De Gasperi championed cultural autonomy. He worked to defend Italian culture against Germanization efforts in his home region. He also gained experience in finance as a board member for a local investment bank. By 1911, he entered politics as a member of the Austrian Reichsrat. He represented the Popular Political Union of Trentino for six years. When World War I began, he remained politically neutral. He supported efforts by Pope Benedict XV to find an honorable peace. However, he eventually sided with Italy as the conflict progressed.

The rise of Fascism in Italy presented a major challenge to De Gasperi. He helped found the Italian People's Party (PPI) in 1919. He served in the Italian Parliament from 1921 to 1924. During this time, Benito Mussolini's Fascist movement grew stronger. De Gasperi disagreed with Fascist violence and changes to the election system. Following the murder of politician Giacomo Matteotti, the PPI split into different groups. De Gasperi led the anti-Fascist faction until the party was dissolved in 1926.

He was arrested in 1927 and spent eighteen months in prison. This period severely damaged his health.

After his release, De Gasperi worked at the Vatican Library for fourteen years. During World War II, he organized the creation of the Christian Democracy party. He published "Ideas for Reconstruction" in 1943 to outline the party's goals. When the Allies liberated Southern Italy, he joined the National Liberation Committee. He eventually became the first prime minister of the Italian Republic. In 1946, Italians voted in a referendum to end the monarchy. The vote resulted in 54% of the people choosing a republic. De Gasperi briefly served as the provisional head of state during this transition.

De Gasperi's leadership helped rebuild Italy's place in the world. He led the country into NATO in 1949. He also helped Italy join the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). This organization was a vital step toward the modern European Union.

To help the economy, he traveled to the United States in 1947. During this ten-day trip, he secured a $100 million Eximbank loan. This funding was essential for the implementation of the Marshall Plan. This economic aid helped revive the Italian economy after the destruction of the war.

The 1948 general election was a turning point in the Cold War. The United States feared that the Italian Communist Party (PCI) would gain power. To prevent this, various groups supported De Gasperi's Christian Democracy party.

The campaign was intense and featured significant foreign influence. For example, the CIA provided funds to anti-communist candidates. The election was a struggle between two very different visions for Italian society. De Gasperi's victory ensured that Italy remained aligned with Western democratic systems. His work connected Italy to the broader political and economic structures of Europe.
