Wallenstein was born on 24 September 1583 in Heřmanice, Bohemia. At that time, Bohemia was the largest region in the Holy Roman Empire. His education was wide and international. He studied at the University of Altdorf and traveled through France and Italy. He attended the universities of Bologna and Padua. These travels made him a multilingual scholar. He was fluent in German, Czech, Latin, and Italian. He also understood Spanish and spoke some French. In 1606, he converted to Catholicism. This change occurred while he was studying at the University of Olomouc.

Wealth and status changed significantly through his personal life. In 1609, Wallenstein married Anna Lucretia, a wealthy widow. She owned several towns in eastern Moravia. When she died in 1614, Wallenstein inherited her large estates. This inheritance provided him with the capital needed to build his influence. He later married Countess Isabella Katharina von Harrach in 1623. These marriages helped make him one of the wealthiest men in the Bohemian Crown.

Wallenstein's military career rose during the Bohemian Revolt of 1618. He chose to support the Catholic Habsburg dynasty against the Protestant rebels. He initially commanded an infantry regiment. After the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, he received confiscated Protestant lands. He organized these new possessions into the Duchy of Friedland in northern Bohemia. In 1625, Wallenstein began a new way of managing warfare. He raised a massive army of 50,000 men for the Emperor. He used a principle where the war would feed itself to manage costs. This method allowed him to gain significant fiscal credit. He used loans to buy more land and titles. In 1626, he won a major victory at the Dessau Bridge. As a reward, he was named an imperial count palatine and later a Duke.

His power eventually caused tension with the Emperor. In 1628, he was named Admiral of the Baltic Sea. However, he failed to capture the city of Stralsund. This failure prevented him from controlling the naval power of the north. By 1630, Emperor Ferdinand II grew wary of Wallenstein's growing ambition. The Emperor released him from his military service. Later, the Emperor recalled him to fight the Swedish king, Gustavus Adolphus.

Wallenstein's final years were marked by political danger. In 1633, he attempted to negotiate armistices to end the long war. These peace efforts led to accusations of treachery against him. Some people believed he was planning to ally with the Protestants. This suspicion resulted in his assassination in 1634 at Eger, Bohemia. An official of the army killed him with the approval of the Emperor. His death ended the career of one of history's most complex military figures.
