He used a pen name to write his books. This name, Moravia, came from a historic land in the Czech Republic. It was a special name linked to his paternal grandmother. He was born in Rome to a wealthy middle-class family. His father was an architect and a painter named Carlo. His mother, Teresa, came from Dalmatian roots. Moravia’s life was shaped by hard times and big changes. When he was nine years old, he became very ill. He had a bone infection called tuberculosis. This sickness kept him in bed for five years. These years of reading helped him become a great writer. He eventually wrote his first novel in 1929. This book was called "The Time of Indifference." He paid for the book to be made himself.

His career grew as he wrote for many newspapers. He worked for papers like La Stampa and Gazzetta del Popolo. During the time of Fascism, life was very difficult. The government sometimes stopped him from publishing his work. They even seized some of his books. Because of this, he sometimes wrote using a fake name. He also used different styles to hide his true meaning. In 1941, he married a writer named Elsa Morante. They lived in a place called Capri for a while. Later, they moved to a region called Ciociaria. These real-life experiences gave him many ideas for stories.
