Many people in Russia lived there to hunt for fur.

But it was hard for Russia to protect the land.

Russia decided to sell the land to the United States. A leader named William Seward helped make the deal. The United States paid seven million dollars for it.

Some people thought the land was just a cold icebox. They thought the money was wasted. But many others thought it was a great idea. They hoped to trade with lands far away.

After the sale, most Russians left the area. The land stayed very quiet for a long time. Later, people found gold there.

Alaska is now a big state in our country. It is a very special part of the world.
