He was the first king of a group called the Visigoths. These people lived near the borders of the Roman Empire. Alaric lived during a time when the Roman Empire was very large. However, the empire was also starting to change and face many hard jobs. Alaric wanted to find a safe place for his people to live. He also wanted to make sure they had enough food to eat. His life shows how much the world was changing back then.

Alaric's life began near the Danube River in a place called the Balkans.

He grew up around Roman soldiers and many different tribes. At first, he worked as a soldier for the Roman army. He even helped the Roman Emperor Theodosius win a big battle. This battle was called the Battle of Frigidus in the year 394. During this fight, about 10,000 of Alaric's men died. This was a very sad and hard loss for his people.

Even though he helped Rome, the leaders did not give him a reward. Alaric wanted a high rank and more power in the army. Because he did not get what he expected, he decided to lead his own people instead. Modern historians think he became king around the year 395. He wanted his people to work hard to find their own kingdom. He did not want them to just serve other people. This choice changed the history of the whole Roman Empire.

Alaric led his army through many different lands to find what they needed. He marched through Greece and reached the famous city of Athens in 396. Later, he moved his people into Italy to find more supplies.

He navigated complex relationships with Roman emperors to find a permanent home. His life illustrates the shifting power between ancient empires and migrating tribes.

Historians debate his exact origins. Some say he belonged to the noble Balti dynasty of the Thervingian Goths. Others suggest he came from the Greuthung tribes. Regardless of his bloodline, he grew up in a world of Roman influence. He lived among veterans of the Battle of Adrianople, which had occurred in 378 AD. This battle had destroyed much of the Eastern Roman army.

In 382 AD, a treaty called a foedus was signed between Rome and the Goths. This agreement allowed the Goths to live on Roman soil. In exchange, they had to supply troops for the Roman army. This status gave Alaric a unique way to rise in power. He began his career under the Gothic soldier Gainas before joining the Roman military. He served under Emperor Theodosius I, helping to defeat the Frankish usurper Arbogast. This occurred at the Battle of Frigidus in 394 AD.

Despite his service, the Battle of Frigidus was a heavy cost for Alaric. Around 10,000 of his men died during the conflict. The Roman leadership showed little gratitude for this sacrifice. Alaric had hoped for a promotion to magister militum, a high military rank. When Rome refused to reward him, he turned against the empire. After Theodosius died in 395 AD, Alaric emerged as the king of the Visigoths. He encouraged his people to seek their own kingdom through their own efforts.

Alaric spent much of his kingship trying to secure resources for his followers. He needed Roman legitimacy to gain access to food and wealth. He led his army through the East, eventually reaching Athens in 396 AD. Archaeological evidence shows that his forces caused widespread damage to the city. Later, the Eastern Roman official Eutropius appointed Alaric as magister militum per Illyricum. This title gave him legal rights to receive gold and grain. However, political shifts in Constantinople eventually removed these benefits.

Desperate for provisions, Alaric invaded Italy starting in late 401 or early 402 AD. He crossed the Alpine frontier near the city of Aquileia. There, he faced the Roman general Stilicho in two major battles. The first was at Pollentia on Easter Sunday. Stilicho won this battle and captured Alaric's wife and children. The second battle took place at Verona, where Alaric was defeated again. Despite these losses, Alaric continued to move his people through the Italian peninsula.

Alaric's most famous achievement was the sack of Rome in 410 AD.
