He is best known for his long leadership at the Federal Reserve. This group is often called the Fed. As chairman, he helped guide the money system in the United States. He held this important job for many years. His work shaped how much it cost to borrow money. This influenced how people spent and saved throughout the country.

Greenspan's work involved making big decisions about interest rates. Interest rates are the costs people pay to use borrowed money. When the Fed changes these rates, it affects the whole economy. He used these tools to try to keep the economy steady. Some of his actions were called the "Greenspan put." This was a way the Fed provided money to support the financial system. He also helped organize a bailout for Mexico during a crisis in 1994.

Not everyone agreed with all of his choices. Some leaders in Congress criticized his views on taxes. Other experts argued his policies helped cause the dot-com bubble. They also linked his work to the subprime mortgage crisis. This was a time when housing prices changed in a difficult way. Greenspan argued the housing issue was a global problem. He believed it was caused by falling interest rates around the world.
