Akira is a landmark Japanese animated film released in 1988. It belongs to the cyberpunk genre, which often explores futuristic settings with advanced technology and social decay. The film was directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, who also wrote the screenplay. It is based on Otomo's own manga, a type of Japanese comic book, which began publication in 1982. The movie is set in a dystopian version of the year 2019. This setting follows a world war triggered by the sudden destruction of Tokyo on July 16, 1988.

The story takes place in the massive, sprawling metropolis of Neo-Tokyo. This city is filled with corruption, anti-government protests, terrorism, and gang violence. The plot focuses on Shōtarō Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang called the Capsules. His childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, undergoes a massive change after a motorcycle accident. Tetsuo collides with a child esper, which is a person with psychic abilities. This accident causes Tetsuo to acquire powerful telekinetic powers. These abilities eventually grow so large that they threaten the entire military complex of the city.

To create the film's high level of detail, the production used several advanced techniques. The animation team used more than 160,000 animation cels to achieve super-fluid motion. They also utilized computer-generated imagery (CGI) for specific tasks. This included animating a pattern indicator used by Doctor Ōnishi. Computers also helped plot the paths of falling objects and modeled parallax effects for backgrounds. CGI was even used to tweak lighting and lens flares. Additionally, the film used a rare method called pre-scoring. This means the dialogue was recorded before production began. This allowed animators to match the characters' lip movements perfectly to the spoken words.

The production of Akira was a massive undertaking that required a unique partnership. A group known as the Akira Committee was formed to fund the project. This committee included several major companies, such as Toho, Bandai, and Kodansha. They needed an unconventionally high starting budget of about ¥500,000,000 to meet Otomo's epic standards. The total budget for production and advertising was believed to reach even higher amounts. Because the film had to be a lean, two-hour story, Otomo had to write a new ending. This was different from the manga, which continued to be published for two years after the film's release. Otomo had to ensure the film provided closure for the characters and themes without being too long.

The film is also famous for its unique musical identity. The soundtrack was composed by Shōji Yamashiro and performed by the group Geinoh Yamashirogumi. The music draws heavily from traditional Indonesian gamelan and Japanese noh music. This combination of sounds helps build the atmosphere of the futuristic city. Many character names in the film also have specific origins. Otomo was a fan of the series Tetsujin 28-go. Because of this, Kaneda and Colonel Shikishima share names with characters from that series. Even the character Tetsuo was named after the son of the character Shikishima in that older work.

Akira had a significant impact on global popular culture. After its release in Japan, it was released in the United States by Streamline Pictures in 1989. It gained an international cult following through theatrical releases and VHS copies. The film eventually earned over $80 million in home video sales worldwide. It is widely cited as an influential work in the development of adult animation and Japanese cyberpunk. The film helped pave the way for the growth of anime in the Western world. Its influence can be seen in many modern works, including comics, films, music, television, and video games.

Beyond its visual and musical style, Akira connects to broader themes of power and existence. The story explores how sudden, immense power can lead to a loss of control. In the climax, Tetsuo's powers cause him to mutate into a massive mass of flesh. This event leads to a singularity, which is a point of infinite density. This singularity destroys much of Neo-Tokyo, mirroring the destruction of the original Tokyo. The film concludes with a sense of transcendence, as Tetsuo moves into another plane of reality. This complex storytelling helped establish anime as a serious medium for mature, sophisticated audiences around the world.
