Then, it joined with Nukata Prefecture to become what it is today. The name Aichi might come from an old word, Ayuchi.

In 1871, the region was briefly divided into Nagoya Prefecture and Nukata Prefecture. Nagoya Prefecture included most of Owari but not the Chita Peninsula. Nukata Prefecture combined the Chita Peninsula with Mikawa. In April 1872, Nagoya Prefecture was renamed Aichi Prefecture. Later that same year, it united with Nukata Prefecture. The name Aichi likely comes from the word Ayuchi. This refers to the Ayuchi tidal flats, now the Fujimae tidal flat.
Nagoya is the capital and the most significant city in the prefecture. 
Transportation in Aichi is highly developed and complex. The Chubu Centrair International Airport is a major hub. 

Tourism and culture offer many ways to experience Aichi. Visitors can explore Nagoya Castle or the Meiji Mura museum. Meiji Mura preserves historic buildings from the Meiji and Taishō periods. For families, the Legoland Japan Resort is a popular destination. Sports are also a major part of life in Aichi. Many professional teams are based here, including the Chunichi Dragons. Fans can watch baseball at the Nagoya Dome.
