Ahmadou Babatoura Ahidjo was a central figure in the history of Cameroon. He served as the nation's first president from 1960 until 1982. Before becoming president, he was the first Prime Minister. He played a vital role in establishing Cameroon as an independent state. Ahidjo also worked to integrate the French-speaking and English-speaking parts of the country. His leadership shaped the political structure of the nation for many years.

Ahidjo's early life provided a foundation for his future career. He was born on August 24, 1924, in Garoua. This city was a major river port on the Benue River. His father was a Fulani village chief. His mother was a Fulani woman of slave descent.

As a child, Ahidjo attended a Quranic kuttab school. In 1932, he began attending a local government primary school. After a brief period working in the veterinary service, he earned his school certification in 1939. He later studied at the Ecole Primaire Superieur in the capital, Yaoundé.

His professional journey began in the civil service. In 1942, he worked as a radio operator for a postal service. He traveled to many cities, including Douala, Ngaoundéré, Bertoua, and Mokolo. This travel helped him develop a sense of national identity. It also gave him the wisdom to govern a multiethnic state.

By 1946, he had entered territorial politics. He later served in the Assembly of the French Union and as President of the Legislative Assembly of Cameroon. In 1958, at age thirty-four, he became Prime Minister.

Ahidjo focused on several major political goals during his rise to power. He wanted to move Cameroon toward independence from French colonial rule. He also sought to reunite the different factions of the country. In 1959, he addressed the United Nations General Assembly to support the independence plan. He negotiated with France in Paris to secure formal recognition of Cameroonian independence. This process led to the end of French trusteeship on January 1, 1960.

During his presidency, Ahidjo managed complex internal and external challenges. He faced a rebellion from the Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC). This group was a pro-communist party that rejected French influence. Ahidjo defeated the rebellion by 1970 with the help of French military force. He also worked to merge the British-controlled and French-controlled areas of Cameroon. In 1961, he met with Premier John Foncha in Bamenda. They drafted a constitution in Foumban. This created the Federal Republic of Cameroon on October 1, 1961.

Ahidjo's government moved toward a highly centralized political system. In 1966, he established a single-party state under the Cameroon National Union (CNU). He believed this was necessary for national unity. In 1972, he abolished the federal system through a referendum. This event was called "The Glorious Revolution of May Twentieth." He replaced the federation with a unitary state, known as the United Republic of Cameroon. This change removed the position of Vice President. He also appointed Paul Biya as Prime Minister in 1975.

His political career ended in a way that surprised many citizens. Ahidjo resigned from the presidency in 1982, and Paul Biya became president. Later, in 1984, Ahidjo was accused of being behind a coup plot against Biya. He was sentenced to death in absentia. However, he lived in exile in Dakar, Senegal. He died of natural causes in 1989.

His life remains a significant part of Cameroon's transition from a mandate territory to a modern state.
