Long ago, a man named Nader Shah rose to power.

The Afsharid Empire was a large and powerful land in the mid-18th century. It was ruled by the Afsharid dynasty, which was named after the Afshar tribe. This tribe came from the Khorasan region in north-eastern Iran. The empire was known as the Guarded Domains of Iran. This name showed that the people felt their land was a single, united place. It was a place where Persian culture and Shia Islam were very important.
Nader Shah was the man who started this new dynasty. He was born in November 1688 into a humble family of herdsmen. His family belonged to the Qereqlu branch of the Afshar tribe. Nader grew up speaking a Turkic dialect as his first language. Later, he learned Persian, which was the language used in cities and high culture. He became a very skilled military leader during a time of great trouble.
Nader's path to becoming king was full of many battles. In 1722, the Safavid dynasty was losing its power. Other groups, like the Ghilzai Afghans, took over parts of the land. At the same time, Russia and the Ottoman Empire took other territories. Nader joined forces with the son of the old leader, Tahmasp II. He fought to win back lands from the Afghans, the Russians, and the Ottomans.
In 1736, Nader made a very big move to take control. He held a grand meeting called a qoroltai on the Mughan plain. This plain was chosen because it was huge and had plenty of food for animals. Many leaders, soldiers, and religious figures attended this meeting. On March 8, 1736, Nader was officially crowned as the Shah. Under his rule, the empire grew to its largest size in a long time. It reached into parts of modern-day India, Uzbekistan, and Turkey.
Nader's military strength was seen in many famous battles. He led his army to victory against the powerful Mughal Empire. One famous fight was the Battle of Karnal, where his army won against a much larger force. However, the empire did not last long after Nader died in 1747. Most of the lands were divided among different groups like the Zands and the Durranis. Eventually, the Qajar Empire took over in 1796 and brought the regions back together.
The Afsharid Empire, also known as the Guarded Domains of Iran, was a powerful state in the mid-18th century. This empire was established by the Afsharid dynasty, a Turkoman group from the Khorasan province in north-eastern Iran. The name "Guarded Domains" represented a sense of political and territorial unity. This unity was built upon shared elements like the Persian language, monarchy, and Shia Islam. During this era, these factors became central to a developing national identity.
Nader Shah founded the dynasty after a career as a successful military commander. He was born in November 1688 as Nadr Qoli to a humble, semi-nomadic pastoral family. His family belonged to the Qereqlu branch of the Afshar tribe. While Nader grew up speaking a Turkic dialect, he eventually learned Persian for high culture. He rose to prominence during a period of intense political instability. In 1722, the Safavid dynasty began to lose its grip on power. This weakness allowed the Ghilzai Mahmud Hotak Afghans to overthrow the Safavid shah, Soltan Hoseyn.
As the Safavids declined, foreign powers also seized Iranian territories. Russian forces took lands in the Caucasus and northern Iran. Meanwhile, the Ottoman Empire invaded from the west. In 1724, the Treaty of Constantinople saw these two powers divide the conquered areas. Nader Shah began his rise by joining forces with Tahmasp II, the son of the deposed Safavid shah. Nader led a resistance against the Ghilzai Afghans and drove their leader, Ashraf Khan, from the capital in 1729. After these victories, Nader became a figure of national importance.
Nader’s path to the throne involved complex political maneuvers and many wars. In 1732, Nader deposed Tahmasp II. He placed Tahmasp's infant son, Abbas III, on the throne and acted as regent. Nader then focused on reclaiming lost lands from the Ottomans and Russians. He used strategic diplomacy, such as the Treaty of Resht in 1732 and the Treaty of Ganja in 1735, to force Russian withdrawals. Through the 1736 Treaty of Constantinople, he also forced the Ottomans to recognize his authority.
To formalize his rule, Nader organized a grand assembly known as a qoroltai. This meeting took place on the Mughan plain, a location chosen for its massive size and abundant fodder for animals. He summoned the military, the nobility, and religious leaders to the plains. On March 8, 1736, Nader was officially proclaimed Shah of Iran. This date was chosen by his astrologers because it was considered propitious. The assembly included many enthusiastic supporters and some who feared Nader's power.
Under Nader Shah's leadership, the empire reached its greatest extent since the Sasanian Empire. His military campaigns expanded the borders into the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and parts of Central Asia. He also pushed into Arabia, the Indian subcontinent, Iraq, and Turkey. One of his most famous military achievements was the invasion of the Mughal Empire. At the Battle of Karnal, Nader's forces crushed a Mughal army that was six times larger than his own.
Despite these massive conquests, the Afsharid Empire was relatively short-lived. Following Nader Shah's death in 1747, the empire began to fragment. Most of the territories were divided among the Zands, the Durranis, and the Khanate of Kalat. Afsharid rule was eventually reduced to a small local state in Khorasan. The dynasty finally ended in 1796 when Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar overthrew them. The Qajar Empire then reestablished Iranian control over the regions that had been lost.
