Afanasy Fet was a celebrated Russian poet of the 19th century. He is widely regarded as a supreme master of lyric verse. Lyric poetry focuses on expressing personal emotions and internal feelings.
Fet's early life was marked by a profound identity crisis. He was born in 1820 as Afanasy Afanasyevich Shenshin. His father was a Russian landlord named Afanasy Shenshin. His mother, Charlotte Becker, was a German woman. Due to a legal complication regarding his parents' marriage, his surname had to change. He was forced to adopt the name Foeth, his biological father's name.
As a student at Moscow University, Fet began his literary journey. He studied law and philology, which is the study of language and literature. During this time, he met influential friends like the poet Apollon Grigoriev. Grigoriev's ideas helped shape Fet's early approach to poetic composition. In 1840, Fet published his first collection, titled *Lyric Pantheon*. The famous writer Nikolay Gogol reviewed the work and called him "undoubtedly gifted." This early success brought him recognition from major critics like Vissarion Belinsky.

His time with *Sovremennik* brought him into the orbit of Leo Tolstoy. The two became lifelong friends during this period. Tolstoy was deeply impressed by Fet's "miraculous poetic daring."
In 1857, Fet married Maria Petrovna Botkina in Paris. Following his marriage, he retired from the army in 1858. He moved to the Stepanovka khutor in the Mtsensk region. There, he dedicated himself to intensive agricultural work. He transformed desolate, bare land into a flourishing garden and a successful farm. He managed horse-breeding and operated a mill.
Fet's transition from poet to landowner was controversial among his contemporaries. Some writers, such as Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, criticized him for abandoning literature. They viewed his focus on farming as a retreat from society. Despite this criticism, Fet felt a sense of pride in his hard work. He achieved his success through labor rather than political connections. While he stopped writing poetry for many years, his earlier lyrical works remained foundational to Russian literature. His life represents a unique intersection of high art and practical, earthly labor.
