Aepycamelus was a very special kind of camel. 

This animal had a very unique body. Its neck was very long. This happened because its neck bones were long like a giraffe's. 
Scientists have studied these fossils for a long time. In 1894, a species called Procamelus altus was described. This was based on a bone found in Oregon. Later, in 1901, W. D. Matthew used the name Alticamelus. He used a complete skeleton from Colorado for this. In 1909, Matthew and Cook named Alticamelus giraffinus. Finally, J. R. Macdonald changed the name to Aepycamelus in 1956. He did this to group the species correctly.
We know a lot about where they lived. Fossils of Aepycamelus are found in many places. They are in Montana and California. You can even find them as far away as Florida.

He did this after examining a complete skeleton of a tall camel found in Colorado. Later, in 1909, Matthew and Cook named a new species, Alticamelus giraffinus. 
Fossil evidence shows that Aepycamelus lived across a wide area of North America. Their remains have been distributed from Montana all the way to Florida. You can also find fossils in California. These fossils are often found in Neogene deposits.
