Eventually, J. R. Macdonald recognized that Alticamelus was a nomen dubium. This is a term used when a name is of uncertain application. In 1956, Macdonald erected the genus Aepycamelus to correctly group the species.

Fossil evidence shows that Aepycamelus lived across a wide area of North America. Their remains have been distributed from Montana all the way to Florida. You can also find fossils in California. These fossils are often found in Neogene deposits.
