He was born in a place called Rumbeke. He first went to Paris to study law. But he chose to study music instead. He studied with a great composer named Jean Mouton.

Willaert moved to Italy to work. In 1527, he became the music leader at St. Mark's. This church is in Venice. He held this job until he died in 1562. He had a new way to lead singers. He split the choir into two groups. The groups sang back and forth to each other. This is called antiphonal style.

He wrote many kinds of music. He wrote sacred music for church. He also wrote madrigals. These are songs for voices that show the feelings of the words. He was a great teacher, too. Many famous musicians came to learn from him. His work changed how people wrote music for a long time.
