It sits on the north coast of the Gulf of Aden. This position is near the eastern approach to the Red Sea. The city acts as a vital maritime gateway. It connects the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea. This makes it a crucial hub for Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Currently, Aden serves as the de facto capital of Yemen. It has held this role since 2014.

The geography of the city is defined by its coastline and harbors. Aden encloses the eastern side of a vast natural harbor. This harbor forms the basis of the modern port. Another area, known as Little Aden, was developed for specific industrial uses. It serves as the site for an oil refinery and a tanker port.

These facilities were originally operated by British Petroleum. They were transferred to the South Yemeni government in 1978. The city is part of the Aden Governorate. This governorate is divided into eight distinct districts.

Historically, the city has been a target for many rulers. In the 1st century BC, it was known as Eudaemon. This name means "blissful" or "prosperous."

At that time, the city was more like an island. A land bridge called a tombolo connected it to the mainland. The Greeks also recognized it as an important Arabic trade port. The city was home to the ancient Kingdom of Awsan. In the 1st century AD, the city faced economic changes. New shipping practices allowed sailors to bypass the port by crossing directly to India.

Water management was essential for survival in this region. The Himyarites likely built massive water cisterns in the area. These structures are known as the Cisterns of Aden. They could store approximately 136,382,757 liters of water.

During the 14th century, the traveler Ibn Battuta visited the city. He noted the importance of the Cisterns of Tawila. These reservoirs collected rainwater for the citizens to drink. Such engineering allowed the city to thrive despite having few natural water resources.

British administration shaped much of the modern city. The British controlled Aden from 1839 until 1967.

During this era, the city was organized into several sectors. Crater served as the original port. Ma'alla became the location for the modern port. Tawahi was formerly known as Steamer Point. The area also included Gold Mohur resorts. Khormaksar sat on the isthmus connecting the city to the mainland. This district hosts the Aden International Airport and various diplomatic missions.

The population of Aden has grown significantly over time. By 2026, the population was estimated at 1,194,160 people.

This makes it one of the largest cities in Yemen. The city has seen many political shifts. It was the capital of South Yemen before the union with North Yemen in 1990. Since the start of the Yemeni civil war, it has served as a temporary capital. It also hosted the Southern Transitional Council from 2018 to 2026.

The name of the city itself reflects its purpose. In Arabic, the word "Aden" means residence. It is often called "Aden Al-Balad," meaning the settlement of the country.

Ancient geographers noted its importance for trade. Yaqut al-Hamwi described it as a famous city for Indian ships. Merchants gathered there because of the port. Even when resources were scarce, the trade kept the city alive. Today, Aden remains a vital link in global maritime routes.
