Baobab flowers have a complex structure involving a calyx and a staminal tube. The outer calyx consists of five lobes that are often green or reddish. As the flower opens, these lobes split and become reflexed, or bent back, at the base. Inside, there is a central staminal tube made of fused filaments. A long style, which is tipped with a stigma, emerges from these filaments. The fruit follows the flowering stage and is typically large, oval, or round. Most species produce a berry-like fruit with a hard, indehiscent shell.
Scientists classify the genus *Adansonia* into three distinct sections based on their characteristics. Section *Adansonia* contains only one species, *Adansonia digitata*, which is the type species for the genus. This species is unique because it is tetraploid, meaning it has four sets of chromosomes, while all other species are diploid. 

The history of baobab study spans several centuries of botanical exploration. The earliest written reports appear in a 14th-century travelogue by the Arab traveler Ibn Battuta. In 1592, Prospero Alpini provided the first botanical description of the fruit in Egypt. He referred to them as "Bahobab," which likely means "many-seeded fruit." 
Baobabs are significant both ecologically and historically. In Africa, the *A. digitata* species is considered an icon of the bushland. Local populations often use the fruit for food and medicine. They also use the trunks as reservoirs to store water. Many animals depend on them, such as the mottled spinetail and various weaver birds that use them for nesting. However, the genus faces modern challenges. In the early 21st century, many large baobabs in southern Africa began to die rapidly. Scientists believe this may be caused by mass dehydration due to rising temperatures and drought.
