Adam's Bridge is a long chain of islands.
Some parts of the bridge are dry.
Long ago, this place was all dry land. The sea rose and covered the land. Now, it is a chain of small reefs.
People have many stories about this place. Some say a god built it. Others say it is a natural part of the Earth.
It is a very special place in the ocean.
Adam's Bridge is a long chain of small islands.

Scientists say the bridge was once dry land. Long ago, sea levels were much lower. This connected India and Sri Lanka by land. Later, the sea rose and covered the area. Today, it is made of many small reefs. Some parts are made of sandstone.
Many people have special stories about this place. In Hindu belief, the god Rama built the bridge. He wanted to reach the island of Lanka. In Islamic tradition, some believe Adam crossed the bridge. This happened after he left the Garden of Eden.
There are plans to build a new canal. This canal would let big ships pass through the area. However, some people want to protect the bridge. They worry about the sea life and the history of the site.

Scientists believe the bridge was once a path of dry land. Long ago, during the Last Glacial Period, the sea levels were much lower. This meant the Palk Strait was not underwater. India and Sri Lanka were actually connected by land back then. About 7,000 years ago, the sea rose and covered the area. Later, around 5,000 years ago, some parts became dry land again. Today, the bridge is made of many small patch reefs. The Indian Space Research Organisation says there are 103 of these reefs. They are made of sandstone and other materials that get softer as they go deeper.
Many people have very old stories about this place. In the Hindu epic called the Ramayana, the god Rama built a bridge. He used an army of Vanaras, which are forest-dwellers, to reach the island of Lanka. In Islamic tradition, there is a belief about Adam. Some believe he crossed this bridge to get to India after leaving the Garden of Eden. These stories make the bridge a very important place for many people.
Because the water is shallow, people have tried to make a path for ships. In the late 1700s, a geographer named James Rennell suggested digging a path. Later, in 1823, Sir Arthur Cotton surveyed the area.
Today, there are big plans for a new shipping canal. This is called the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project. The goal is to dig a deep channel so ships can save 30 hours of travel time.

Adam's Bridge is a long chain of natural limestone shoals.

Geological evidence shows how this area changed over thousands of years. During the Last Glacial Period, sea levels were much lower. This period lasted from 115,000 to 11,700 years ago. Because the water was lower, the Palk Strait was dry land. This land connected the Indian subcontinent to Sri Lanka. During the Holocene, sea levels rose to their current heights. By about 7,000 years ago, the strait became submerged. Parts of the bridge emerged again about 5,000 years ago due to local sea level changes.
The physical makeup of the bridge is quite complex. It consists of a series of parallel ledges. These ledges are made of sandstone and conglomerates. The material is hard at the surface of the shoals. As the ledges descend into the water, they become coarser and softer. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has studied these formations closely. Their Marine and Water Resources Group concluded the bridge contains 103 small patch reefs.
Many people hold deep religious beliefs about the origin of this bridge. In the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, the god Rama built a bridge. He used an army of Vanaras to reach the island of Lanka. This was done to rescue his wife, Sita, from Ravana. In Islamic tradition, the name Adam's Bridge comes from a different story. Some believe Adam crossed this path to reach India after leaving the Garden of Eden. These traditions make the location culturally significant to many people.
Because the waters are shallow, people have tried to make them easier for ships. In the late 18th century, Major James Rennell suggested dredging the strait. He believed a navigable passage could be maintained. In 1823, Sir Arthur Cotton surveyed the Pamban channel. He also suggested dredging to help ships pass. In 1828, Major Sim began blasting and removing rocks. Later, in 1837, a team of lieutenants conducted a detailed marine survey.
Today, there is a major debate regarding the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project. This project aims to create a deep channel for ships. This would save about 30 hours of travel time. The plan involves dredging the ocean floor near Dhanushkodi. However, many groups oppose this because it would damage Adam's Bridge. Some groups argue for its religious importance. Others worry about the ecology and marine life. There are also concerns about the loss of thorium deposits and tsunami risks.
There are other ideas for connecting the two regions. One proposal is the Palk Strait Bridge. This would be a road and rail bridge and tunnel. It would run from Dhanushkodi to Talaimannar. This project aims to help with industry and tourism. The idea was first discussed in 2002. It was revived for serious consideration in 2023. As of August 2024, feasibility studies are nearing completion. This shows how much the geography of this area continues to influence modern plans.
