Adam Riess is a famous American astrophysicist. An astrophysicist is a scientist who studies how space and the stars work.

He is a professor at Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute. His work helps us understand the history of our huge universe. He is especially known for studying something called supernovae. These are massive explosions of dying stars that happen far away in space.

Riess uses these supernovae to learn about the cosmos. He looks at the color shifts in the light coming from these explosions. By watching these colors, his team can tell how far away the stars are. In 1998, his team found a huge surprise. They discovered that the expansion of the universe is actually accelerating. This means the universe is growing faster and faster every second. Before this, scientists thought the growth of the universe was slowing down.

This discovery changed how we think about space. It led to new questions about dark energy, which is a mysterious force. To find this answer, Riess worked with other scientists. He led the High-z Supernova Search Team with Brian Schmidt in 1998. Another scientist, Saul Perlmutter, led a different team that found the same thing. Because both teams saw the same result, the idea was accepted. This big discovery was even named the Breakthrough of the Year in 1998.

Riess has received many important honors for his hard work. He shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics with Schmidt and Perlmutter. He also won the 2006 Shaw Prize in Astronomy. In 2008, he won a MacArthur "Genius" Grant. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2009. His research is very famous and has been cited over 137,000 times by other scientists. He even won the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.

Today, Riess continues to lead important research projects. He leads the SH0ES Team, which started in 2005. This team uses the Hubble Space Telescope to measure how fast the universe grows. They have reached a precision of nearly 1% in their measurements. This work has led to a scientific debate called the Hubble tension. This tension is a difference between two different ways of measuring the universe. It helps scientists test if our current models of the universe are still correct.
