About 2 to 5 percent of people have this fear. Women are twice as likely to have it as men. Some people think this fear comes from a bad fall. But studies show this is not always true. A study of 1,000 people found something interesting. People with less fear of heights actually had more falls. This means some people might learn to be careful through small falls.

Other scientists think it might be a natural instinct. It could be a way for our bodies to stay safe. Some people also feel dizzy in high places. This feeling is called vertigo. Vertigo happens when your eyes and your balance senses do not agree. This can make you feel like you are spinning. Doctors use many ways to help. Some use virtual reality to help people practice being high in a safe way.
