The name Accra has a very interesting story. It comes from the Akan word Nkran, which means "ants." This refers to the many soldier ant hills in the countryside.

People called the area Accra because of these ants. The local Ga people also call the place Ga or Gaga. Historians think the name links the ants to the Ga people. They saw the ants' behavior as similar to the people. In the past, people even saw anthills as sacred places.

Accra grew from several different settlements. These places grew around old forts built by different countries. There was British Fort James and Dutch Fort Crêvecoeur. There was also Danish Fort Christiansborg.

These settlements were known as Jamestown, Usshertown, and Christiansborg. Over time, these separate areas merged into one modern city. The city's history is shown in its many buildings. You can see old colonial buildings from the 1800s. You can also see modern skyscrapers and apartment blocks.

Many different groups helped shape the city's history. In the mid-1600s, several European nations built forts. The British eventually took control of the area. In 1877, Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast. This happened because the climate was drier than Cape Coast.

Later, the city expanded as more people moved there. In the 1920s, cocoa became a very important export. This helped commerce grow even faster than the government. The city changed from a small settlement into a big center for trade.

Accra is now a global city with many connections. A research group named it a "Gamma −" level global city in 2020. This means it has growing international influence.

The name Accra has deep roots in local language and history. It is derived from the Akan word Nkran, which means "ants." This name refers to the many soldier anthills found in the surrounding countryside. The Twi speakers applied this name to both the town and the people. The local Ga people call the area Ga or Gaga. Historian Carl Christian Reindorf suggested a link between these ants and the Ga people. He noted the martial qualities and migratory behavior of the ants. In the past, the Ga people saw anthills as sacred places. These red mounds were viewed as connections between the known world and the world of the dead.

Accra grew from the merger of several distinct settlements. These towns formed around European forts built in the mid-17th century. These included British Fort James and Dutch Fort Crêvecoeur. There was also the Danish Fort Christiansborg.

These locations became known as Jamestown, Usshertown, and Christiansborg. The city was once a regional power under the Accra Kingdom. By the late 15th century, the kingdom ruled from the capital at Ayawaso. The kingdom faced many challenges, including wars with the Akwamu Kingdom. In 1677, the Akwamu attacked and sacked Ayawaso. This period of conflict eventually led to the rise of British influence.

British control increased steadily during the 1800s. Denmark sold Christiansborg to the British in 1851. The Netherlands was the last to sell its interests in 1871. In 1877, Accra replaced Cape Coast as the capital of the British Gold Coast. This change happened because Accra had a drier climate than Cape Coast.

As the administrative center, the city began to expand. New neighborhoods like Victoriaborg were formed for European residents. In 1908, the city expanded again following a bubonic plague epidemic. This led to the creation of Adabraka, a neighborhood for the native population. This expansion helped relieve congestion in the crowded city center.

The 20th century brought significant economic and social shifts. In the 1920s, transportation improved between Accra and inland cities. This allowed cocoa to become the city's largest export. Commerce began to overtake government functions as the main driver of the city. Under the governorship of Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, the city saw major infrastructure improvements. He oversaw the building of the Korle-Bu hospital and Achimota school. He also built a bridge across the Korle Lagoon in 1923.

These projects encouraged more people to migrate from rural areas to the city.

Political tension also shaped the modern city. In 1948, unarmed ex-servicemen marched on Christiansborg Castle. They wanted to petition the colonial governor for their pay and benefits. The police fired upon the marchers, and three leaders were killed. This event caused the 1948 Accra riots. Following World War II, the city's landscape became more complex. Some areas like Ridge were planned for low density. Other areas like Nima grew without government regulation. This created a mix of planned neighborhoods and crowded shanty towns.

Today, Accra is a modern metropolis with a diverse architectural landscape. You can see 19th-century colonial buildings alongside modern skyscrapers.

The city's administrative center includes a large judicial complex on High Street. In 2020, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network named Accra a "Gamma −" level global city. This designation means it has growing international influence and connectedness. The city remains a vital center for business, law, and culture in West Africa.
