Acceleration

Have you ever felt a sudden push against your seat in a fast car?

This feeling is caused by acceleration. In science, acceleration is any change in velocity. Velocity is a word for how fast something moves and the direction it travels.

Because acceleration involves direction, it is called a vector quantity. This means it has both a size, called magnitude, and a specific direction. Acceleration is a key part of kinematics, which is the study of motion. It happens whenever an object changes its speed or its path.

There are different ways that acceleration works. If an object moves in a straight line and speeds up, it has linear acceleration. This is also called tangential acceleration because it follows the direction of motion. If the object slows down, it experiences deceleration or retardation. This happens when the acceleration is in the opposite direction of the movement.

When an object moves in a curve, it undergoes radial acceleration. This is also called centripetal acceleration during circular motions. It changes the direction of the object even if the speed stays the same. A satellite orbiting the Earth is a great example of this.

Isaac Newton helped us understand why this happens. In Newtonian mechanics, acceleration comes from forces acting on a mass. Newton's second law explains the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration. The net acceleration depends on the net force acting on the object. If you increase the force, the acceleration increases too. However, if the object has a larger mass, the acceleration will be smaller. The direction of the acceleration will always match the direction of the net force.

Scientists use specific ways to measure these changes. The standard unit for acceleration is the metre per second squared.

You can find the average acceleration by looking at the change in velocity over a period of time. If the velocity changes by the same amount every second, it is called uniform acceleration.

There is also instantaneous acceleration, which is the acceleration at one exact moment. To find this, scientists look at the limit of average acceleration over a tiny interval of time. This is often calculated using calculus as the derivative of velocity.

Acceleration is all around us in everyday life. You might feel it while riding in an elevator. As the elevator starts to move up, you might feel heavier or lighter.

When a car turns a corner, you feel a force pushing you to the side. This is the reaction to radial acceleration. If a spacecraft needs to slow down, it might use a retrorocket to create deceleration. Even a swinging pendulum experiences different types of acceleration as it moves. Understanding these movements helps us describe how everything in our universe moves.
