Academic art

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Academic art is a special style of painting and sculpture. It was shaped by famous art academies in Europe. These schools helped set the rules for what good art should look like. For many years, this style was very important across the Western world. It began in Italy during the mid-16th century. Later, it reached a peak in the 19th century after the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1815.

This art style was not just about making things look pretty. It was a way for artists to show great skill and high ideas. Artists wanted to create works that looked perfect and polished. They used color and form to make their art feel grand.

To make academic art, students had to follow a specific way of learning. They did not just practice drawing by themselves. Instead, they studied the work of great masters from the past. Students in academies learned important subjects like anatomy and geometry. This helped them understand how the human body and shapes work. They also attended lectures and had many debates about art theory. This training turned artists into thinkers and intellectuals.

They aimed to create large history paintings. These paintings often told stories from ancient history or famous myths. Some artists even made huge statues called monumental works.

The history of these academies began in Renaissance Italy. In 1563, Cosimo I de' Medici founded the first academy in Florence. A famous man named Giorgio Vasari helped start it. It was called the Accademia e Compagnia delle Arti del Disegno. This school was very successful and famous very quickly. Even great artists like Titian and Tintoretto wanted to join. About ten years later, the Accademia di San Luca was founded in Rome. This school focused a lot on art theory and drawing classes.

France eventually became the most important center for this style. The French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture was founded in 1648. A leader named Charles Le Brun helped run it. King Louis XIV later reorganized the academy in 1661. He wanted the academy to help show the power of his kingdom. This made the French style very influential throughout Europe. Famous painters like Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres helped shape this French way. Other artists like William-Adolphe Bouguereau also followed these rules.

The academy even helped decide which art was sold and shown to the public.

Academic art is linked to many other things you might know. It is closely related to Beaux-Arts architecture and classical music. It also shares ideas with classical dance. However, not everyone liked the strict rules of the academies. Some artists felt the rules were too tight and restrictive. They wanted to paint real, everyday life instead of perfect myths. This led to new movements like Realism and Impressionism. By World War I, most people had stopped following the academic style.
