Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates.

It sits on a T-shaped island in the Persian Gulf. This island is located on the central-western coast of the country. Most of the city lives on this island. However, many suburban districts sit on the mainland nearby. You can cross from the island to the mainland using several bridges. These include the Maqta and Mussafah bridges.

Long ago, the area was very different. People lived by diving for pearls in the sea. This pearl industry was very important for a long time. Divers would dive for up to three minutes at a time. They did not use air tanks or machines to help them. Instead, they used leather nose clips and finger coverings.
