It is most closely related to a language called Abaza. Many people use Abkhaz to share their history and culture. It is an official language in Abkhazia, where about 190,000 people speak it. Because of history, many Abkhaz people live far from their original home. This group of people living away from their homeland is called a diaspora. They live in many places like Turkey, Syria, Jordan, and even Germany.

Learning to speak Abkhaz involves many different sounds. The language is very unique because it has a huge number of consonants. The standard version of the language has 58 different consonant sounds. However, it only has two main vowel sounds.

This mix of many consonants and very few vowels makes the language sound very special. Some dialects, like the Bzyp dialect, have even more unique sounds than the standard version. These sounds help people tell the difference between different words.

Abkhaz has a long and interesting history of being written down. The earliest written records we know of use the Arabic script. These were recorded by a traveler named Evliya Çelebi in the 17th century. For a long time, it was not used as a literary language for writing books. That changed about 100 years ago. In 1918, Tbilisi State University became the first place to teach the language in a university. Teachers like Petre Charaia, Dimitri Gulia, and Simon Janashia helped study it deeply.

Different groups of people speak different versions, called dialects, of Abkhaz. The Abzhywa dialect is used for the main written version of the language. The Bzyp dialect is spoken northwest of Sukhumi near the Bzyp River. In Turkey, many people speak the Sadz dialect in the Sakarya province.

There are also many speakers in Russia, with about 6,786 reported in a 2010 census. In Ukraine, around 317 people speak it. Even in places like the United States and the United Kingdom, small communities exist.

People have used many different alphabets to write Abkhaz over the years. They once used a Latin script with letters like "a" and "b." They also used the Georgian script for a while between 1938 and 1954. Today, most people use the Cyrillic script to write it. This script was used in different ways by people like Baron Peter von Uslar and Dmitry Gulia. Using these scripts helps keep the language alive for new generations. Learning the language is a way for people to stay connected to their roots.
