He used math to understand the smallest parts of our world. In 1979, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prize with Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Glashow. They won for their work on the electroweak theory. This theory shows how two forces work together. These are the weak force and electromagnetism.

His work explained how tiny particles interact with each other. He helped show how the weak force and electromagnetism are linked. This is called the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction. He also helped predict something called the weak neutral current. Later, he worked on the Pati-Salam model with Jogesh Pati. This was a Grand Unified Theory proposed in 1974. He also studied things like the magnetic photon and vector mesons.

While at Cambridge, he earned a PhD in theoretical physics. He solved a very hard problem in only six months. This problem had stopped other great scientists for a long time. He became a professor at several important universities. He taught at the University of the Punjab in 1952. He also worked at Imperial College London starting in 1957. In 1959, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society.
