Khan became an expert in a hard job called uranium enrichment. Uranium is a metal used for nuclear power. To use it for weapons, scientists must separate its different parts. Most uranium is a type called U-238, which cannot be used for weapons. Only a tiny amount is U-235, which is fissile.

To sort these parts, scientists use gas centrifuges. These machines spin uranium gas very fast, up to 100,000 revolutions per minute. The spinning helps separate the different isotopes. Khan worked to make these machines work much better.

Khan studied at many great schools in Europe. He went to the Technical University in West Berlin and the Delft University of Technology. Later, he earned a doctoral degree in Belgium in 1972. He worked for a company called FDO in the Netherlands. This company helped a group called URENCO. URENCO used centrifuges to make nuclear fuel. While working there, Khan learned the secrets of how these machines work.

In 1974, India performed a nuclear test called "Smiling Buddha." This event made Khan want to help Pakistan. He wrote to the Pakistani Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. In 1976, Khan founded the Khan Research Laboratories, or KRL. He served as the chief scientist and director there for many years. However, some people accused him of espionage. Espionage is when someone takes secret information without permission. He was accused of taking centrifuge designs from URENCO.

Khan's life remained complicated for a long time. In 2004, the government put him under house arrest. This means he was not allowed to leave his home. He later won a lawsuit and was freed in 2009. His family history included diverse roots, including claims of Yusufzai lineage and Uzbek ancestry. This ancestral connection to the conqueror Muhammad of Ghor later inspired him to name a ballistic missile the Ghauri. In 1952, Khan migrated to Pakistan via the Sind Mail train. He later settled in Karachi, where he began his formal scientific education.

Khan's academic journey took him through several prestigious European technical universities. He graduated from the University of Karachi in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in physics. He focused his studies on solid-state physics before seeking advanced training abroad. In 1961, he moved to West Germany to study material science at the Technical University in West Berlin. He later transferred to the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 1965. By 1972, he earned a DEng in metallurgical engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. His doctoral thesis involved complex work on martensite and graphene morphology.

After his studies, Khan entered the professional world of nuclear technology in Europe. He joined the Physics Dynamics Research Laboratory, known as FDO, in Amsterdam. FDO acted as a subcontractor for the URENCO Group, an international uranium enrichment consortium. Khan eventually secured a senior technical position directly with URENCO to study uranium metallurgy. His work focused on the highly technical process of uranium enrichment. This process is necessary because natural uranium consists of different isotopes with different properties.

Uranium enrichment is a difficult task due to the specific makeup of the metal. Natural uranium contains 99.3% uranium-238, which is non-fissile. It also contains 0.0055% uranium-234. Only a tiny fraction, about 0.71%, is uranium-235, which is a fissile material. To separate these isotopes, scientists use the Zippe-type centrifugal method. This involves turning uranium hexafluoride (UF6) gas into a state where it can be processed. The gas is placed in centrifuges that rotate at speeds up to 100,000 revolutions per minute. This rapid spinning allows for the electromagnetic separation of the isotopes. Khan spent his time from 1973 to 1974 improving the efficiency of these machines.

In 1974, the geopolitical landscape changed when India conducted a nuclear test named "Smiling Buddha."

This event prompted Khan to offer his expertise to Pakistan. He wrote to the Pakistani Prime Minister's Secretariat to express his interest. After meeting with Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in December 1974, Khan became central to Pakistan's nuclear efforts. He argued that producing highly enriched uranium (HEU) was more effective than focusing on weapon-grade plutonium. In 1976, he founded the Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) in Kahuta. He served as the chief scientist and director of KRL for many years.

Khan's career was also marked by serious allegations of nuclear proliferation and espionage. During his time in the Netherlands, colleagues suspected he was stealing classified centrifuge designs. It was reported that he took URENCO documents home to be translated by his wife. In 1983, the Netherlands sentenced him in absentia to four years in prison for espionage, though this conviction was later overturned. Following the September 11 attacks, concerns about weapons of mass destruction grew globally. Former CIA Director George Tenet described Khan as being "at least as dangerous as Osama bin Laden" due to his role in proliferation networks.

In 2004, the Musharraf administration debriefed Khan regarding evidence of nuclear proliferation provided by the United States. Khan was subsequently placed under house arrest. He faced accusations of selling nuclear secrets illegally, though he later retracted his admissions and leveled accusations against former leaders. In 2009, the Islamabad High Court declared his debriefing unconstitutional and freed him from house arrest. The Obama administration expressed concern following this verdict, noting that he remained a proliferation risk. Abdul Qadeer Khan died on October 10, 2021. He was honored with a state funeral at the Faisal Mosque before being buried in Islamabad.
