In 1920, Abd el-Krim began a big rebellion.
Winning big battles made him a powerful president. However, things became very difficult soon after.
After he surrendered, he was sent away to live in exile.
Mohammed ben Abdelkrim El Khattabi, known as Abd el-Krim, was a Moroccan revolutionary and political leader.
Abd el-Krim was born in 1882 in the settlement of Ajdir, Morocco. His family history is a subject of much debate among historians. He claimed ancestry to an Arab tribe from the Hejaz region. Some scholars believe this was a common way for Berber leaders to gain prestige. European historians often argue his family was of pure Berber origin. Because Riffian families did not keep formal genealogy documents, his exact roots remain unclear. Some even suggested he was related to Idris II, the founder of Fez.
He received a very high level of education during his youth.
During World War I, Abd el-Krim became involved in complex international politics. He was noted for being a Germanophile, meaning he supported Germany. He even offered to help German interests obtain mining licenses in the Rif mountains. This involvement led to his arrest by Spanish authorities. He was imprisoned in the Kasbah of Chefchaouen from 1916 to 1918.
In 1920, Abd el-Krim and his brother M'Hammad launched a rebellion. Their goal was to unite Riffian tribes into an independent Republic of the Rif. They wanted to end the colonial projects of France and Spain in Morocco. A major turning point occurred in June 1921 at the Battle of Annual. Spanish General Manuel Fernández Silvestre had ignored warnings to stay away from the Ameqqran River. In response, Riffian forces attacked and achieved a massive victory. This battle resulted in the deaths of 13,000 Spanish and colonial troops.
This victory established Abd el-Krim as a master of guerrilla warfare.

Following his surrender, Abd el-Krim lived in exile for many years. He was first sent to the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. He lived there from 1926 until 1947. Eventually, he moved to Cairo, Egypt, where he became a major figure in Arab nationalism. He supported independence movements in French Indochina and Algeria. He even corresponded with Ho Chi Minh during the French Indochina War. In 1948, he was appointed head of the Liberation Committee of the Arab Maghreb. He remained a powerful symbol of the struggle against colonial rule until his death in 1963.
