Aaron Burr Jr. was a significant figure in the early history of the United States.

He was a lawyer, a businessman, and a politician. Most notably, he served as the third vice president of the United States from 1801 to 1805. This period occurred during Thomas Jefferson's first presidential term. Burr is also widely remembered for his involvement in a famous duel with Alexander Hamilton. Additionally, he was linked to a controversial plan known as the Burr conspiracy. This alleged plot involved creating an independent country from parts of the U.S. or the Spanish Empire.

Burr was born on February 6, 1756, in Newark, New Jersey.

His family was very prominent in religious and academic circles. His father, Reverend Aaron Burr Sr., was a Presbyterian minister. He also served as the second president of the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University. Burr's maternal grandfather was the famous theologian Jonathan Edwards. Sadly, Burr's childhood was marked by significant loss. His father died in 1757, and his mother and grandmother died in 1758. This left Burr and his sister, Sarah, as orphans by the age of two.

Despite these early hardships, Burr pursued a high level of education. He attended the Elizabethtown Academy in New Jersey. At age 13, he entered the College of New Jersey as a sophomore. He joined literary and debating societies like the American Whig Society. Burr earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1772 at age 16. He also studied theology for two years before changing his career path. Eventually, he moved to Litchfield, Connecticut, to study law under Tapping Reeve. This training prepared him for his future legal career.

When the American Revolutionary War began in 1775, Burr joined the Continental Army.

He participated in a difficult expedition to Quebec led by Colonel Benedict Arnold. During the Battle of Quebec on December 31, 1775, Burr attempted to recover the body of General Richard Montgomery. He was later promoted to captain and served on George Washington's staff in Manhattan. Burr showed great vigilance during the British landing in Manhattan. He helped save an entire brigade from being captured during a retreat. However, he did not receive a formal commendation from Washington for this action.

Burr's military service continued through several difficult years. In 1777, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He led a regiment that successfully defended against nighttime raids in New Jersey. During the winter at Valley Forge, he maintained discipline and stopped a mutiny. However, the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 took a toll on his health. Burr suffered from heatstroke and exhaustion during this conflict. Due to these ongoing health issues, he resigned from the Continental Army in March 1779. He later served as a messenger for high-ranking generals like Arthur St. Clair.

After the war, Burr transitioned into a successful legal and political career.

He opened a law office in Albany before moving to New York City. Burr became a leader in the Democratic-Republican Party. He helped transform the Tammany Society from a social club into a powerful political machine. In 1791, he was elected to the United States Senate. Burr also ran for president in the election of 1800. This election resulted in a tie in the Electoral College between Burr and Thomas Jefferson. The House of Representatives eventually chose Jefferson, making Burr the vice president.

His time in the administration was marked by tension with President Jefferson.

The two men were often at odds, and Burr was largely sidelined. Following the ratification of the 12th Amendment, Burr was not chosen as Jefferson's running mate in 1804. Seeking new opportunities, Burr traveled toward the American frontier. In 1807, he was arrested in Alabama on charges of treason. This was related to the Burr conspiracy, his alleged plan to form a new nation. Although he faced multiple trials, Burr was acquitted of the charges each time.

In his later years, Burr lived a more private life. He spent a period living in Europe before returning to New York in 1812. He resumed his legal practice in the city where he had once been a political powerhouse.
