Because of its location, it is one of the most crowded parts of Switzerland. The capital city of this region is Aarau.

Many different groups have lived in this land over a long time. As far back as 200 BC, a Celtic tribe called the Helvetians lived here. Later, the Romans occupied the area and built a large settlement. This settlement was named Vindonissa and was located near what is now Brugg.

After the Romans, the Franks arrived by the 6th century. The land was often a border between different strong lands. For many years, different families and cities fought for control over these territories.

In the year 1415, a big change happened when the Swiss Confederacy invaded. They took control of many towns like Aarau, Lenzburg, Brugg, and Zofingen.

The Swiss also took many Habsburg castles during this time. Some areas, like the Freie Ämter, were ruled by several different Swiss members.

These areas had their own rules and courts. The way the land was ruled changed many times through different wars and peace deals. It was a very busy time for the people living there.

History shows that different parts of the land had different lives. For example, the area known as Unteraargau became very industrial in the late 1700s.

Because of these new industries, the number of people living there grew very fast. Between 1764 and 1798, the population grew by 35 percent. Other areas, like the County of Baden, were once mostly used for farming.

These places had many different nobles who held power in small pieces of land. This made it hard to make big changes for everyone.

The Aargau we see today was officially formed in 1803. This happened because of an agreement called the Act of Mediation.

Today, Aargau is one of the most densely populated regions in the country. It is divided into eleven distinct districts. The capital city of the canton is Aarau.

The history of this land began long before the modern canton existed. As early as 200 BC, the Helvetians lived here. The Helvetians were a tribe of Celts. Later, the Romans occupied the territory. They built a major settlement called Vindonissa. This settlement was located near the modern town of Brugg.

By the 6th century, the Franks had taken control of the area. For many centuries, the region served as a disputed borderland. It sat between the duchies of Alamannia and Burgundy within the Frankish Empire.

During the Middle Ages, power in Aargau was divided among many groups. The von Wetterau family held the countship from 750 until 1030. By the year 1200, the Zähringen dukes and the Habsburg houses controlled much of the region. The Habsburgs were a powerful family that held much of the land. However, the Swiss Confederacy changed everything in 1415. The Confederacy used an imperial ban against Frederick IV of Habsburg as a reason to invade. They quickly conquered towns like Aarau, Lenzburg, Brugg, and Zofingen.

They also captured most of the Habsburg castles.

After the conquest, the territory was split into different administrative zones. One part was called the Unteraargau, or Bernese Aargau. This area was ruled directly by the city-state of Bern. In the late 18th century, Bern encouraged industrial development here. This led to massive population growth. Between 1764 and 1798, the population grew by 35 percent.

Another area was known as the Freie Ämter, or free bailiwicks. These were subject lands governed by the Swiss Confederation. The Freie Ämter were often split by religious conflicts. Wars between Reformed and Catholic armies used these lands as staging grounds.

The County of Baden was another unique administrative region. It was a shared territory, or condominium, of the entire Old Swiss Confederacy. This area had a very complex legal structure. Over 30 different nobles held rights to hold courts in small pieces of land. These overlapping jurisdictions caused many conflicts. The administration changed frequently because governors were appointed every two years. This made it difficult to create long-term economic policies. For a long time, the area lacked factories or large industries.

It remained mostly an agrarian region until much later.

The modern canton of Aargau was finally created in 1803. This happened because of the Act of Mediation during the Napoleonic era. The new canton combined three short-lived regions. These were the cantons of Aargau, Baden, and Fricktal. Each of these had existed briefly during the Helvetic Republic.

This reorganization brought the different pieces of the region into one single political unit. The canton celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2003.

Today, Aargau is a mix of historical sites and modern industry. You can see old architecture in the streets of Aarau.

You can also see large modern structures like the Leibstadt Nuclear Power Plant.

The region has moved from being a disputed borderland to a central part of Switzerland. Its history of division and conquest shaped the way its districts are organized today. The landscape remains defined by the rivers and hills that have seen many different rulers pass through.
