A Christmas Carol is a famous novella by Charles Dickens.

It was first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843. The story is a ghost story set during the Christmas season. It follows an elderly miser named Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is a selfish man who dislikes Christmas. The story explores how a person can undergo redemption. Redemption is the process of changing from a bad person to a good one. Dickens used this narrative to address the treatment of the poor in Victorian England. Academics still debate if the story is a secular tale or a Christian allegory.

The plot follows a specific sequence of supernatural visits. It begins on a cold Christmas Eve in London. Seven years after his death, Jacob Marley visits Scrooge. Marley was Scrooge's former business partner. He is bound by heavy chains made of money boxes. These chains represent the greed and selfishness of his life. Marley warns Scrooge that three spirits will visit him. The first spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Past. It shows Scrooge his lonely childhood and his lost love, Belle. The second spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Present.

This spirit shows Scrooge the joy of others, including the Cratchit family. It also shows two emaciated children named Ignorance and Want. The third spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. This silent ghost shows Scrooge a dark future. Scrooge sees his own name on a neglected grave. This vision forces him to change his ways immediately.

Dickens structured the novella into five distinct parts called "staves." This term comes from music, referring to the lines on which notes are written. Each stave represents a new stage of Scrooge's transformation. Stave one introduces the cold nature of Scrooge and Marley's warning. Stave two and stave three focus on the lessons of memory and current reality. Stave four presents the terrifying consequences of a life lived without kindness. Finally, stave five shows the results of Scrooge's change. He becomes a generous man who helps his clerk, Bob Cratchit. He also becomes a father figure to Tiny Tim.

The history of the book is tied to Dickens's own life. Dickens experienced significant financial hardship as a child. When he was twelve, his father was sent to a debtors' prison. Dickens had to work in a dirty, rat-infested shoe-blacking factory. This experience caused him deep social outrage. He also visited the Field Lane Ragged School for street children. These experiences inspired his desire to help the poor. He realized a story could reach more people than a political pamphlet. He was also influenced by authors like Washington Irving.

Irving wrote about old English Christmas traditions. Dickens also drew from the structure of fairy tales and nursery stories.

The publication of the novella was a massive success. The first edition was published on 19 December 1843. It sold out by Christmas Eve of that same year. By the end of 1844, thirteen editions had been released. Most critics gave the book favorable reviews. However, the book faced legal trouble in January 1844. Someone illicitly copied the story without permission. Dickens took legal action against these publishers. The publishers went bankrupt, which reduced Dickens's profits. Despite this, the book never went out of print.

Dickens even performed public readings of the story. He gave 127 performances between 1849 and 1870.

Many specific details in the story highlight the social issues of the time. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows the suffering of the working class. One example is Tiny Tim, the youngest son of Bob Cratchit. Tiny Tim is a happy boy but is seriously ill. The spirit warns that he will die unless things change. The story also highlights the cruelty of the wealthy. In the future, businessmen only attend a man's funeral if lunch is provided. Even the local undertaker steals from the deceased. These details show the gap between the rich and the poor in the Victorian era.
