The storm began as a group of thunderstorms near the equator. On April 24, the India Meteorological Department named it a depression. It moved northwest and grew stronger as it moved. The winds grew faster because of a wind surge from the south. By April 29, the storm reached its peak strength. It moved toward the land with very high winds and low pressure.

Some groups even gave it different names like Cyclone Marian or Cyclone Gorky. At the time, storms in this region did not have official names. This storm was a very rare and intense event for the Bay of Bengal.

Many countries helped the people after the storm passed. The United States led a big relief effort called Operation Sea Angel. They sent ships, helicopters, and thousands of people to help. They brought food, water, and medicine to nearly two million survivors. This work helped save about 200,000 lives. Because of this storm, Bangladesh improved its warning systems. They also started planting more trees to help stop future flooding.
