In Western nations, historians often call it the "countercultural decade." This term describes a massive shift in social norms. People challenged old ideas about religion, morality, and law. They also changed how they approached clothing, music, and even schooling.

While some viewed this as a period of social decay, others saw it as a necessary revolution. This decade fundamentally reshaped the relationship between individuals and the systems that govern them.

Cultural expression underwent a radical evolution during these ten years. Music became a primary driver of these social changes. The Beatles led a movement known as the British Invasion in the United States. At the same time, Bob Dylan introduced a folk music revival with poetic lyrics.

In the United Kingdom, the era was famously called the "Swinging Sixties." The United States often referred to it as the "cultural decade." These shifts in art and lifestyle were mirrored by technological growth. The expansion of the middle class allowed more families to own televisions and refrigerators.

This era also saw the rise of new social movements that would change politics forever.

Political leadership in the United States saw significant turnover and turmoil. Four different presidents held office during the decade. Dwight D. Eisenhower finished his term in January 1961. John F. Kennedy followed him but was assassinated in 1963.

Kennedy had pursued anti-communist and Keynesian social reforms. His successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, passed many of these goals into law. Johnson implemented civil rights for African Americans and healthcare for the elderly.

He also launched the Great Society programs to combat poverty. Finally, Richard Nixon served as president before the decade concluded.

Global geopolitics were dominated by the Cold War. This was a period of intense rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union.

A major crisis occurred when Cuba hosted Soviet ballistic missiles. This event brought the world close to a third World War.

However, negotiations between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. allowed both sides to withdraw their weapons. Following Kennedy's death, the rivalry shifted toward proxy wars. These conflicts involved funding insurgencies and supporting puppet governments. This struggle for influence played out across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

The Vietnam War serves as a primary example of this era's intense conflict. In 1961, the U.S. sent approximately 700 advisory forces to Vietnam. By 1963, that number grew to 16,000 personnel.

Following the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution. This gave President Johnson authority to use military force without a formal declaration of war. After 1966, the administration sent more than 500,000 troops to the region. This heavy involvement sparked massive anti-war protests globally.

Many students participated in these protests, which peaked in 1968.

Decolonization and internal revolutions changed the map of the world. In Africa, 42 countries gained independence from European colonial rulers. This included 22 nations leaving the French empire and 12 leaving the British Empire.

Meanwhile, China experienced the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. Launched by Mao Zedong, this movement sought to purge capitalist elements from society. It resulted in the arrest of many politicians and the destruction of cultural artifacts. In Europe, the construction of the Berlin Wall began in 1961.

These events demonstrated how deeply political ideologies were reshaping sovereign nations.

Economic and demographic shifts also defined the decade's scale. The world population grew from 3.0 billion to 3.7 billion people. During this time, there were approximately 1.15 billion births and 500 million deaths.
