Economic struggles changed how people lived every day. In the United States, the Great Depression caused widespread poverty. Many people lost their jobs and had very little money. 


Leaders made big choices to try and fix these problems. In the United States, President Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1933. 
Political changes in Europe led to much conflict. In 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party rose to power in Germany. 


Even with these hard times, people found new ways to enjoy life. Movies became very popular because they could now use sound. 

The 1930s was a decade of massive global shifts. 
The economic downfall began with the Wall Street crash of 1929. This was the largest stock market crash in American history. It triggered the Great Depression, a period of severe global poverty. Unemployment and scarcity became common in many major nations. The United States and Germany suffered particularly hard. In the United States, the Dust Bowl worsened the struggle. 

Governments responded to these crises in different ways. In the United States, President Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1933. He introduced the New Deal to provide social reforms. 
Political shifts in Europe created intense conflict and suffering. In 1933, Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP rose to power in Germany. The Nazi government became a totalitarian dictatorship. They passed laws that discriminated against Jews and other ethnic minorities. 
Aggressive foreign policies led to several major wars. Germany remilitarized the Rhineland in 1936 and annexed Austria in 1938. 


Natural disasters and famines also caused massive loss of life. Between 1930 and 1933, the Soviet Union faced a severe famine. This was caused by forced collectivization and severe droughts. It resulted in 5.7 to 8.7 million deaths. 
Despite these hardships, culture and technology continued to evolve. The advent of sound changed the film industry forever. Musical films became the most popular genre for audiences.
