This cycle allows the order to spread across most continents, though they are absent in Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The history of these insects is recorded in the fossil record. Scientists have identified eleven extinct species, many of which are preserved in amber. 
Scientists categorize Zoraptera into two main families: Zorotypidae and Spiralizoridae. These families contain four subfamilies and nine different genera. Currently, there are 51 known species, though some have yet to be described. The order is also studied through its evolutionary relationships, known as phylogeny. While some morphological traits suggest they are related to webspinners in the order Embioptera, molecular analysis of 18s ribosomal DNA suggests a different connection. This DNA evidence supports a close relationship with the superorder Dictyoptera. 

Social behaviors within these colonies can be quite complex. In the species Centrozoros gurneyi, colonies typically consist of about 30 individuals, though they can range from a few dozen to several hundred. In many colonies, males establish a linear dominance hierarchy. This hierarchy is often based on how long the male has been a member of the colony rather than his size. The dominant male uses this rank to control a harem of females. In other species like Latinozoros barberi, males use courtship rituals instead. They possess a cephalic gland on their head that secretes fluid. The female accepts this droplet, which triggers mating behavior.
Some species have developed even more unusual reproductive methods. In Spermozoros impolitus, the male transfers a spermatophore to the female. This structure contains a single giant sperm cell. This cell can unravel to a length nearly equal to the female herself. Scientists believe this massive cell serves a purpose: it physically blocks the female's genital tract. This prevents other males from fertilizing her. Through these diverse behaviors and specialized bodies, Zoraptera continue to occupy their unique niche in the natural world.
