In 1866, shop owners began advertising it in American newspapers. It was even patented in the United Kingdom and France in 1867.

Other inventors like Peter Hubert Desvignes created versions that used electric sparks or even physical models like insects to create movement. These experiments helped bridge the gap between simple toys and advanced optical science.

Today, the principles of the zoetrope live on in large-scale public art. Linear zoetropes are often used in subway systems to entertain commuters. In 1980, filmmaker Bill Brand installed the "Masstransiscope" in a New York City subway station. This installation featured a wall with 228 slits and hand-painted panels. In 2001, Joshua Spodek led the development of a new class of linear zoetropes. His design debuted in the Atlanta subway system. This display is nearly 980 feet long and provides an animation that lasts about 20 seconds. These modern examples show how an old idea can still capture our imagination in a fast-moving world.
