Because they allow for quick fastening, they have become the most widespread fastening system in the world.

These elements can be individual pieces of metal or a continuous plastic coil. The slider contains a Y-shaped channel that directs the movement of these teeth. When you move the slider along the rows, it meshes the teeth together to join the material. Moving the slider in the opposite direction separates the teeth to create an opening. This simple cause-and-effect process allows a user to precisely increase or decrease the size of an opening.

There are several distinct types of zippers designed for different purposes. Metal zippers are the classic version, often used on jeans or pencil cases. These feature individual teeth molded from brass, aluminum, or nickel. Coil zippers are very common and use polyester windings to form the teeth. Within this category, invisible zippers, or concealed zippers, hide the teeth behind a tape to remain unseen on dresses or skirts. There are also reverse coil zippers, where the coil sits on the back side. These are often used for water-resistant or waterproof zippers, such as those found on diving dry suits.

The history of the zipper involves many inventors and several decades of refinement. In 1851, Elias Howe patented an improvement for garment fastenings, but it was more like a drawstring than a slide fastener. In 1892, Whitcomb L. Judson, an American inventor from Chicago, patented a "shoe-fastening" known as the clasp locker.

Judson debuted his device at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, but it did not achieve much commercial success. His early prototypes often suffered from mechanical problems like jamming. It was not until later engineers improved the design that the modern zipper became reliable.

Gideon Sundbäck, a Swedish-American electrical engineer, played the most critical role in the zipper's evolution. Working for the Fastener Manufacturing and Machine Company, Sundbäck redesigned Judson's fastener to be much more durable. In 1909, he registered a patent in Germany, and his "Separable Fastener" patent was issued in the United States in 1917. Sundbäck significantly increased the density of the fastening elements. He moved from four elements per inch to ten or eleven elements per inch. This change made the connection much stronger. He also created a specialized machine that could produce a few hundred feet of fastener every day.

The name "zipper" actually comes from a specific product released in 1923. The B. F. Goodrich Company used Sundbäck's fastener on a new type of rubber boots called galoshes. Because the boots could be fastened with a single quick movement, they were called "zippers," and the name eventually applied to the device itself. The zipper saw a major rise in popularity during the 1930s. Sales campaigns promoted zippers in children's clothing to encourage self-reliance in dressing. By 1937, zippers had won the "Battle of the Fly," replacing buttons in men's trousers.

Modern zippers can also feature complex configurations like the double-separating zipper.
