Zhuhai's location next to Macau was very strategic. This allowed the Chinese economy to access global markets through Macau. This status helped Zhuhai become a major city in the Pearl River Delta. Foreign investment in the city reached US$10.344 billion in 2008.

Today, Zhuhai is a center for many high-tech and heavy industries. The local government focuses on five main sectors. These include electronics, computer software, biotechnology and pharmacy, machinery and equipment, and petrochemical industries. The city also has several specialized economic zones. The Zhuhai High-Tech Industrial Development Zone is located near the downtown area. This zone is a showcase for scientific development. The company Meizu is a high-tech product headquartered here.

Another area is the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, which was founded in 1996. This zone encourages industries like telecommunications equipment and medical supplies.

Zhuhai is also a global leader in manufacturing specific goods. It is a massive center for printer consumables. The city manufactures and supplies 70 per cent of the world's ribbons. It also produces 60 per cent of the world's aftermarket inkjet cartridges. Additionally, it makes 20 per cent of the world's third-party laser toner cartridges. The combined sales for these products are worth more than 1.3 billion US dollars. This represents 10 per cent of all global sales. The city maintains a complete supply chain for these materials locally.

Transportation in Zhuhai connects it to the rest of the world. The Zhuhai Jinwan Airport serves as an international hub.

It hosts an annual air show and is located in the Xiangzhou district. For land travel, the Zhuhai Railway Station is a key location.

It sits near the border of Macau at the Gongbei Port.

High-speed trains connect the city to places like Beijing and Shanghai. A massive bridge also connects Zhuhai to Hong Kong. Zhuhai is part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. This is the largest built-up area in the world. As of the 2020 census, this region had more than 65,565,622 inhabitants.
