Zhongshan is a busy city in southern China.

Long ago, the area looked very different. Much of it was part of the Pearl River estuary. Only a few islands sat above the water. Over many years, silt filled in the sea. This process turned the water into dry land. The northern parts did not become dry land until the Ming dynasty. During the Tang dynasty, the area was part of Dongguan County. It was a famous place for producing sea salt.
For a long time, the city had a different name. It was called Xiangshan, which means "Fragrant Mountain." This name came from the many flowers in the nearby mountains. In 1839, an official named Lin Zexu arrived in the area. Later, the area saw fighting during the First Opium War. In 1925, the city was renamed to honor Sun Yat-sen. He was a local man from Cuiheng village. He is known as the "Father of Modern China."
Today, Zhongshan is a place where many people live. As of 2020, over 4.4 million people lived in the city.

Zhongshan is also famous for making many different things. Many towns specialize in making one specific product. For example, Guzhen Town is known for making lighting fixtures. Xiaolan Town makes locks, hardware, and electronic products. Other towns make furniture, clothes, or food. This makes the city a major part of the local economy.
Zhongshan is a prefecture-level city located in southern China. It sits within the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province.
The physical landscape of Zhongshan has changed through natural processes. Thousands of years ago, much of the area was part of the Pearl River estuary. Only scattered islands remained above the water surface. Over time, alluvial silt filled in the estuary from south to north. This sediment created new dry land. The northern sections of the city did not fully fill in until the Ming dynasty. Today, the geography is typical of southern China. The northern urban areas sit on alluvial plains. The southern territory reaches into coastal hills. The Wugui Hills are the most prominent range. Their main summit is the highest point in the city.
Zhongshan has a long and complex history. During the Tang dynasty, it was part of Dongguan County. At that time, it was a significant producer of sea salt. In 1082, a fortified settlement called Xiangshan was founded. This name means "Fragrant Mountain." It referred to the many flowers in the nearby mountains. The area saw conflict during the First Opium War. In 1839, the official Lin Zexu arrived to expel British traders. Later, the region experienced fighting during the Chinese Civil War. In 1949, the People's Liberation Army took control of the area. The city's identity changed forever in 1925. It was renamed Zhongshan to honor Sun Yat-sen. He was a local from Cuiheng village. He is known as the "Father of Modern China."
The climate in Zhongshan is warm and humid. It follows a humid subtropical climate classification. Most rain falls between April and September. The region also experiences thunderstorms and typhoons. The city is known for its leafy parks and wide boulevards.

Zhongshan is a center for specialized manufacturing. It is one of the "Four Little Tigers" in Guangdong. Many towns act as specialized manufacturing hubs. Each town focuses on a specific pillar industry. For example, Guzhen Town is famous for lighting fixtures. Xiaolan Town specializes in locks, hardware, and electronic acoustics. Dachong Town is known for mahogany furniture. Dongfeng Town produces electric household appliances. Shaxi Town focuses on casual wear. Huangpu Town is a center for food processing. This specialization helps drive the local economy. The government also supports research through the Zhongshan National Torch High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. This zone includes the Zhongshan Port, which is a top ten port in China.
The city's administration is quite distinct. It is a prefecture-level city under Guangdong province. It has no county-level divisions. Instead, the municipal government groups 24 township-level divisions into five district areas. These include the Zhongxin, Dongbu, Dongbei, Xibei, and Nanbu areas. The city is also linguistically diverse. While Han Chinese is the main ethnic group, many dialects are spoken. Cantonese is the most common language. Other spoken dialects include Hakka, Yue, and Min. There are even very local dialects like the Shiqi or Guzhen dialects. This variety makes Zhongshan one of the most diverse cities in China.
Zhongshan continues to grow and change. The cityscape is shifting rapidly with new construction. The two Zhongshan International Finance Center Towers are currently the tallest completed buildings. Both towers reach 160 meters and have 55 stories. Other large projects are also planned. The Perfect Eagle Golden Square tower is expected to reach 200 meters. The International Trade Center in Guzhen Town is also a major project. It is expected to reach 230 meters with 65 floors. These developments show the city's ongoing expansion.
