The history of the university begins with the Qiushi Academy. This academy was established in 1897 by Lin Qi, the mayor of Hangzhou. It served as a college-preparatory school. Educational reforms in 1902 and 1904 led to name changes. It became Chekiang University in 1902. By 1903, it was known as Chekiang Higher Institute. Elmer L. Mattox supervised the teaching at the institute. It was the first provincial institution to send students to study abroad. However, political controversy caused the institute to stop recruiting in 1912. It eventually closed in 1914. 
In 1927, the institution was restored as National Third Chung Shan University. This happened after the Northern Expedition when the Kuomintang took control of Hangzhou. The school merged Chekiang Industrial College and Chekiang Agricultural College. In 1928, it became National Chekiang University (NCKU). Jiang Menglin served as the first president. The university faced many challenges during this era. In 1936, Chu Kochen became president. He served until 1949. 
War forced the university to undergo significant physical changes. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the school had to retreat. It moved from Hangzhou to Yishan, then Zunyi, and finally to Meitan in Guizhou Province. During this time, students worked to safeguard historical collections. They protected the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries from Japanese forces. After Japan surrendered in 1945, the university began to return. Faculty and students returned to Hangzhou in 1946. This period also saw the establishment of the first medical school. 
The mid-20th century brought massive structural reorganizations. In 1950, the name changed to Zhejiang University. In 1952, the school became an engineering-specialized university. This was part of a shift toward a Soviet-styled education system. Several departments were moved to other colleges. For example, the College of Agriculture became Zhejiang Agricultural University. The medical school became Zhejiang Medical College. The university moved to the Yuquan campus in 1954. In 1966, the Cultural Revolution caused the university to cease functioning for a time. 
A major turning point occurred in 1998. This year saw a massive merger of four institutions. Zhejiang Medical University, Hangzhou University, and Zhejiang Agricultural University all joined ZJU. This merger created a massive, comprehensive university. At the time, it was considered the largest higher education institution in Asia. It had over 30,000 students and 10,000 staff members. This merger also led to ZJU joining the C9 League. 
Today, the university is a center for both academic and economic activity. It has founded the Zhejiang University Yuanzheng Holding Group. This group has several companies listed on public markets. The university also engages in global partnerships. It formed a joint institute with the University of Edinburgh in 2014. It also signed an agreement with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The university produces many notable alumni. These include Chinese premier Li Qiang and entrepreneur Colin Huang.
