People lived along the banks of the Lishui River. In 1986, workers found stone tools in Cili County. They found 108 items made of stone. These included plate-shaped works and other shapes.
Long ago, the people here were very good at making things. About ten thousand years ago, they used fire to bake pottery. This was a very advanced way to work in China back then. In Cili County, experts found more than 20 of these pottery pieces. In Sangzhi County, they found a black clay pot. This pot had a very unique design on it. These skills show that a highly developed culture lived here. However, the mountains made farming and travel very difficult.
The name Zhangjiajie has a deep meaning. It can be translated as "Zhang family homeland." The name comes from the words "Zhang," "jia," and "jie." One meaning for "jie" is a boundary of ownership. Another meaning for "jie" refers to high mountains.

Zhangjiajie is a prefecture-level city located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, China.

The history of human settlement in this region is incredibly deep. Evidence suggests that people have lived here for 100,000 years. This timeline rivals other major historical sites like Beijing and Xi'an. Early inhabitants lived along both banks of the Lishui River. This river is considered the "mother river" of Zhangjiajie. Throughout the Stone Age, these populations developed specialized skills. They created various tools to survive in the rugged terrain. These early communities established a foundation for the culture that followed.
Archaeologists have uncovered significant evidence of advanced prehistoric technology in the area. In 1986, the Academy of Chinese Social Science found Stone Age relics in Cili County. They unearthed 108 stoneware articles. These items included tapered-form, hacked-tamped, and plate-shaped works. Shortly after, in 1988, the Archaeological Institute of the Hunan Province found more relics in Sangzhi County. These included three pieces of stoneware from a similar era. These discoveries prove that the region hosted a highly developed culture. The precision of these stone tools indicates significant technical skill.
Technological progress continued with the development of pottery-making. About ten thousand years ago, residents used fire to bake pottery. At that time, this pottery-firing technique was the most advanced in China. In Cili County, archaeologists discovered more than 20 such relics. In Sangzhi County, they found a unique black clay pot. This pot featured a design that was quite distinctive for its time. Despite these advancements, the local society eventually waned. The remote geography and mountainous terrain made cultivation and transportation very difficult. This difficulty led to the region being labeled with various discriminatory names in early history.
The name "Zhangjiajie" has a complex and meaningful origin. The name was officially adopted in 1994. This change occurred to give the city more prominence following the UNESCO designation. The name is derived from the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It can be translated as "Zhang family homeland." This comes from "Zhang," a common surname, "jia," meaning family, and "jie," meaning homeland. The term "jie" can also refer to a boundary of ownership or high mountains.
Historical records link the name to the Zhang family lineage. During the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court rewarded Zhang Wancong for his service. He was granted the mountain land around the forest park as a fief. His family moved up the mountain to maintain their estate. By 1630, his descendant Zhang Zaihong established a government office there. This made the area the hereditary territory of the Zhang family. Some traditions also link the name to a Han general named Zhang Liang. He reportedly resettled in the area after the founder of the Han dynasty began persecuting his staff. This history cements the connection between the family name and the land.
Today, Zhangjiajie is a major destination for international tourism. The city is well-connected through several modern transportation networks. The Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport provides scheduled services to major Chinese cities. For rail travel, the city is served by two different stations. The Zhangjiajie railway station sits on the Jiaozuo–Liuzhou railway. The Zhangjiajie West railway station opened more recently in 2019 on the Qianjiang–Changde railway. Travelers can also use the G5513 Changsha–Zhangjiajie Expressway. This road provides a direct link to the provincial capital, Changsha. The city also maintains strong international ties through several sister-city relationships. These include cities in South Korea, the United States, Japan, and Portugal.
