The Zagros Mountains are a large mountain range in West Asia. 

These mountains formed when two huge parts of the Earth pushed together. These parts are the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. This push is still happening today. Because of this, the mountains are getting taller and taller. Most of the mountains are made of sedimentary rock. This is rock made from layers of mud and sand. Much of the rock is limestone. This type of rock is made from old sea life.
The mountains are also a place to find oil.

This collision happened millions of years ago. It also happened during the time of the second ice age. The plates are still pushing against each other today. Because of this, the mountains are getting taller. Scientists use GPS tools to measure this movement. The mountains are being squeezed and changed right now.
Most of the mountains are made of sedimentary rock. These rocks were laid down in layers over a long time. Much of the range is made of limestone. Limestone is a rock made from the remains of old sea life. Other rocks include dolomite and gypsum. Over time, wind and water caused erosion. This wore away softer rocks like mudstone. The harder rocks stayed behind to form long, straight ridges. 
The Zagros region is very important for energy. The way the rocks formed helps trap petroleum underground. This makes the area a major place for oil production. Salt domes are also common in these mountains. These are big lumps of salt under the ground. Salt is very good at trapping oil beneath other layers.

Other events, like the obduction of Neotethys oceanic crust, also shaped the northeastern parts. This tectonic process is still active today. Scientists use Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to monitor this movement. These measurements show that the collision causes deformation across the region. This deformation is not uniform throughout the mountains. The Kazerun strike-slip fault divides the range into two distinct zones. In the southeast, the shortening rate is approximately 2 to 3 millimeters per year. In the northwest, the rate drops to about 1 millimeter per year. The southeast also experiences normal shortening, while the northwest experiences oblique shortening. The presence of salt layers also changes how the mountains deform. In the southeast, a layer of rock salt acts as a ductile decollement. This low-friction layer allows deformation to spread widely, creating lower topography. In the northwest, the salt layer is thin or missing. This results in a narrower deformation zone and higher topography.
The mountains are composed entirely of sedimentary rocks. Much of the range consists of limestone, which is a calcium-rich rock. This rock often forms from the remains of marine organisms. Other common rocks include dolomite, which contains calcium and magnesium, and gypsum. The rocks are organized into different geological stages. The Elevated Zagros contains Paleozoic rocks in its highest sections. The Mesozoic era provided Triassic and Jurassic rocks to the region. The Folded Zagros, located south of the main fault, is made of Tertiary rocks. These include Paleogene rocks and Neogene rocks. 
Erosion has played a major role in shaping the landscape. The stresses from the plate collision folded the existing sedimentary layers. Over time, wind and water performed differential erosion. This process removed softer rocks like mudstone and siltstone. The harder rocks, such as limestone and dolomite, remained behind. This created the long, linear ridges that define the Zagros. This geological history also makes the region vital for energy. The rock layers and tectonic history help trap petroleum underground. Consequently, the Zagros is a major area for oil production. Salt domes are also common features here. These impermeable salt structures frequently trap oil beneath other rock layers. 
The Zagros Mountains have a deep human history. Early humans occupied the region during the Lower Paleolithic Period. Scientists have found Neanderthal fossils in caves like Shanidar, Bisitun, and Wezmeh. In Shanidar Cave, the remains of ten Neanderthals were discovered. These fossils date to between 65,000 and 35,000 years ago. Later, humans moved into the foothills and began early agriculture around 9000 BC. Evidence of early wine production has also been found at sites like Hajji Firuz Tepe. 
Various ethnic groups have lived in these mountains for millennia. The mountains act as a geographic barrier between Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau. Many groups, such as the Kurds and the Lurs, inhabit the region. Some groups are pastoralists who move with the seasons. They move their herds to the east slopes in summer and the west slopes in winter. These traditional movements are known as Yeylāgh and Gheshlāgh. Major cities like Shiraz and Kermanshah sit near the mountain foothills. The diverse landscape continues to shape the culture and lives of the people living there.
