Nikulin used many different ways to perform his art. He was a master of timing, which means he knew exactly when to move or speak. He also used hilarious masks to change his appearance. In the circus, he worked as part of a duo with Mikhail Shuidin. They performed together throughout their entire careers. He even started his career as an assistant to a famous clown named Karandash. He eventually stopped performing in the ring at age 60 because he felt a clown should not be gray.

His journey began in a small place called Demidov.

He was born there in December 1921. His parents were both involved in the theater. His father, Vladimir, was a director and a writer. His mother, Lidiya, was an actress. They moved to Moscow in 1925. Even when a teacher said Yuri had limited abilities, his father helped him prove he was bright. Yuri grew up loving the arts in a school drama club.

Before he became a star, Yuri served in the military during World War II. He was drafted in 1939 when he was only 17 years old. He worked as a wireman, which is someone who lays electrical wires. During one mission, he had to lay 2 km of wire in -30 °C weather. This extreme cold caused severe frostbite that affected his legs for the rest of his life. He became a household name through his work in popular films and the circus. Nikulin was known for his immense versatility in performing both comedy and drama. He earned many high honors, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1973. He also received the Hero of Socialist Labour award in 1990. His talent was recognized with several state awards, including the prestigious Order of Lenin, which he received twice.

Nikulin's performance style was built on precision and unique character work. He mastered the art of timing, which involves the exact moment a performer acts or speaks to create an effect. He also used hilarious masks and rich mimicry to transform his appearance. In the circus ring, he often portrayed a phlegmatic character. This means he played someone who was slow, calm, and unsmiling. This approach was quite different from many other comedians. Outside of Russia, he was often described as a "brainy clown" because he relied heavily on his wits.

His professional career followed several distinct stages. He began his circus journey as an assistant to Karandash, who was the most famous clown in the USSR. Later, he entered the Moscow Circus school, where he met Mikhail Shuidin. The two men formed a clown duo and performed together for their entire careers. Nikulin eventually transitioned from the circus ring to the silver screen. He made his film debut in 1958 in the movie "The Girl with the Guitar." He eventually stopped performing as a clown at age 60. He explained his decision by saying that a clown should not be gray, as it looked pathetic.

Nikulin's filmography includes a wide range of genres and roles. He is perhaps most famous for his collaborations with director Leonid Gaidai. In Gaidai's comedies, Nikulin often played a character named "Fool" as part of a comedic trio. This trio included Georgy Vitsin as "Coward" and Yevgeny Morgunov as "Pro." Their work in films like "Operation Y" and "Kidnapping, Caucasian Style" became very popular. However, Nikulin was not limited to comedy. He demonstrated deep dramatic talent in serious films. He appeared in Andrei Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" and in several movies focused on the themes of World War II.

His early life was shaped by a family deeply rooted in the arts.

He was born in December 1921 in Demidov, Smolensk Oblast. His father, Vladimir, was a director and a writer of satirical plays. His mother, Lidiya, was an actress in the local drama theatre. The family moved to Moscow in 1925. Although a school teacher once labeled him a child with limited abilities, his father defended his intelligence. Yuri spent much of his youth participating in a school drama club, where he became a passionate artist.

Before his rise to fame, Nikulin served in the military during World War II. He was drafted into the Red Army in November 1939 at age 17. During the Winter War with Finland, he served as a wireman in an anti-aircraft battery. In one instance, he had to lay 2 km of wire in temperatures as low as -30 °C. This extreme exposure caused severe frostbite, which meant his legs froze easily for the rest of his life. He also survived the siege of Leningrad and several close calls with artillery and enemy soldiers. He was finally dismissed from military service in 1946.

Nikulin's legacy extends beyond his performances to his leadership and kindness. He served as a director and helped rebuild the Old Circus in Moscow. He also established a foundation to support retired circus artists and performers. He was married to Tatiana Pokroskaya, an equestrian who also worked in the circus and appeared in his films. After Nikulin passed away on 21 August 1997, the Old Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard was renamed in his honor. A bronze monument now stands in front of the circus to remember his contributions to art.
