It sits right on the border between Europe and Asia. The park covers the western slopes of the Ural Mountains. This includes the Northern Ural and the Polar Urals. It is a very important place for nature.

The land here has three different zones. These are the mountains, the foothills, and the lowlands. These areas were formed more than 200 million years ago.

The park has many different types of ground. More than half of the park is covered in taiga forests. The rest is mostly tundra, which is found at high spots. You can also find 20 square kilometers of meadows in river valleys.

The Russian Government created this park on April 23, 1994. They wanted to protect the taiga forests of the Northern Urals. They also wanted people to use the land for fun. In 1995, a special group called UNESCO recognized the area. They named it a World Heritage Site. It is part of the Virgin Komi Forests. This group includes the park and the nearby Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve.

Many tall mountains stand in the center of the park. Mount Narodnaya is the highest peak at 1,894.5 meters. Other high peaks include Mount Karpinsky at 1,878 meters. You can also find Bell Tower, Manaraga, and Nioroika here.

Yugyd Va National Park is a massive protected area located in the Komi Republic of Russia. It holds the title of being the largest national park in Europe. Before Beringia National Park was created in 2013, it was the largest park in all of Russia. The park sits on the western slopes of the Polar Urals and the Northern Ural mountains. This location is special because it sits right on the border between the continents of Europe and Asia.

The geography of the park is defined by several natural boundaries and distinct zones. To the east, the main ridge of the Ural Mountains forms a border. In the north, the Kozhim River marks the edge of the park. To the west, the area is bounded by the Synja, Vangir, and Kosya rivers. The southern boundary is the Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve. The park belongs to the Prepolar-Ural physical-geographical area. This land is divided into three zones: mountain, foothill, and lowland. These different landscapes were formed more than 200 million years ago.

High mountain peaks dominate the central part of the park. Mount Narodnaya is the tallest peak, reaching an elevation of 1,894.5 meters. Mount Karpinsky is another major peak at 1,788 meters. Other notable mountains include Bell Tower, which is 1,724 meters high. Manaraga stands at 1,662 meters, and Nioroika reaches 1,645 meters.

Water systems are also vital to this landscape. Rivers like the Bolshaya Synya flow from the western slopes. These waters supply the Pechora River, which is one of the largest rivers in Europe. The Pechora eventually flows into the Barents Sea.

The vegetation in Yugyd Va changes based on the elevation. More than half of the park is covered by taiga boreal forest. This type of forest is common in northern regions. The remaining area is mostly tundra, which is found at higher elevations where it is colder. There are also about 20 square kilometers of meadows. These meadows can be found in river valleys or as alpine meadows on the mountains.

Many different species of animals live within these forests and mountains. The park is home to 180 bird species, including some that are quite rare. In the water, twenty different fish species inhabit the lakes and rivers. There are five species of amphibians and one species of reptile. Among the mammals, you might find the mountain hare, flying squirrel, and reindeer. Other mammals include the ermine, otter, and wolverine. Large animals like the wolf, bear, and moose, also known as elk, live here. You can also find the pine marten, weasel, fox, and the Arctic fox.

The history of the park is tied to conservation efforts. The Russian Government created Yugyd Va National Park on April 23, 1994. The goals were to protect the taiga forests of the Northern Urals and allow for recreational use. In 1995, the area gained international recognition. UNESCO named the Virgin Komi Forests a World Heritage Site. This site includes both Yugyd Va National Park and the nearby Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve.

Tourism in the park is currently limited by its remote location. About 4,000 tourists visit every year, which is less than the park's potential capacity. In the summer, people enjoy activities like rafting, boating, and hiking. In the winter, visitors participate in Nordic skiing. Limited hunting is also allowed, but people must apply for permits several months in advance. Managing the park is a financial challenge. The park's management reported that user fees, totaling about 2.4 million roubles (US$100,000) annually, do not cover the total expenses of 5 million roubles (US$200,000) per year.
