A big war happened long ago.

A big war happened in 1973.

Many people fought for land. Egypt and Syria were part of the group. The fighting was in the desert and near hills.
Later, leaders worked to stop the fighting. They agreed to a peace deal.
In October 1973, a war began between Israel and several Arab states.

Fighting took place in the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights. These are areas that Israel had taken in 1967. Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal.

Both sides fought hard for many days. Eventually, they agreed to a ceasefire.
The Yom Kippur War was a major conflict in the Middle East.
The war began with a sudden surprise attack.

Both sides received help from very powerful countries. The United States sent many supplies to help Israel. The Soviet Union sent supplies to help the Arab states.

Leaders on both sides had to make very hard choices.
This war led to big changes in how countries acted.
The Yom Kippur War was a major military conflict in the Middle East.
The war grew from tensions after the 1967 Six-Day War. During that earlier conflict, Israel captured several territories. These included Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and much of Syria's Golan Heights.
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat sought a way to change the situation.

The war began with a massive surprise attack on October 6. This date was Yom Kippur, a holy day for Jewish people. It also coincided with the 10th day of Ramadan.
Global superpowers became involved in the fighting through resupply efforts. The United States sent massive amounts of equipment to support Israel. The Soviet Union provided weapons and supplies to the Arab states.

The course of the war shifted through several intense stages. First, Egyptian and Syrian forces made significant early gains. On October 14, Egypt moved troops to help the pressured Syrian front. Israel eventually halted the Egyptian advance in the Sinai. They then pushed Syrian forces back toward the Purple Line.
Ceasefire attempts were difficult to maintain during the conflict. A United Nations-brokered ceasefire was accepted on October 22. However, fighting resumed the very next day due to violations. A second ceasefire was finally reached on October 25. This second agreement officially ended the combat. The war had lasting political consequences for the entire region. It changed how Israel and its neighbors viewed military dominance and peace.
The war eventually helped lead to historic peace agreements. These shifts contributed to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. In 1978, the Camp David Accords were signed. This led to the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty.
