The city has a tropical wet and dry climate. This means there is a long wet season from March to November. Most of the rain falls during these months. However, there is a small break in the rain during July. This makes it look like there are two rainy seasons. Because the city is near the equator, the temperature stays about the same all year.

Long ago, the area was home to the Bakas people. Later, Bantu speakers moved into the highlands. In 1887, German explorers founded a trading base called Epsumb. They used it to trade for rubber and ivory. In 1895, a military garrison was built there. Later, France chose Yaoundé to be the capital in 1922. The city grew quickly and became the capital of the Republic of Cameroon in 1960.

Today, more than 2.8 million people live in Yaoundé. Many people work in government and diplomatic services. There are also many big industries here. They make things like beer, glass, and timber. Some people even practice urban agriculture. The city has about 50,000 pigs and over a million chickens.

The climate in Yaoundé is classified as tropical wet and dry. This means the city experiences a lengthy wet season. This season lasts ten months, from March through November. However, there is a noticeable lull in precipitation during the month of July. This decrease in rain makes it seem as if there are two separate rainy seasons. Because the city is near the equator, the monthly temperatures stay within a narrow range. This creates a thermally equatorial environment.

History shows that the area was originally inhabited by the Bakas people. Later, Bantu speakers moved into the highlands. In 1887, German explorers founded a trading outpost named Epsumb, or Jeundo. They established this base between the Nyong and Sanaga rivers. The outpost served as a center for the rubber and ivory trade. Between 1889 and 1895, a botanist named Georg August Zenker ran an agricultural research station there. The station was named Jaunde after the local Yaunde or Ewondo people.

Political changes shaped the modern city. A German military garrison was built in 1895. During World War I, Belgian troops from the Congo occupied the area. After Germany's defeat, France held eastern Cameroon as a mandate of the League of Nations. France chose Yaoundé to be the colonial capital in 1922. The city grew rapidly after 1957 due to the cocoa crisis and unrest near the coast. When Cameroon gained independence in 1960, Yaoundé remained the seat of government.

The economy of Yaoundé is largely driven by the administrative sector. Many people work in the civil service or diplomatic services. This focus provides a higher standard of living and more security than other parts of the country. Major industries include tobacco, dairy, beer, clay, glass, and timber. The city also acts as a distribution center for coffee, cocoa, and rubber. Local residents even practice urban agriculture. Estimates suggest the city holds 50,000 pigs and over one million chickens.

Urban management has addressed serious environmental challenges. Between 1980 and 2014, the city suffered over 130 floods. These floods caused significant loss of life and economic damage. In 2010, Mayor Jean Claude Adjessa Melingui started the Yaoundé City Sanitation Master Plan. This project aimed to reduce severe flooding that affected 100,000 people at a time. The plan successfully reduced flood frequency from 15 times a year to just three. It also helped cut water-borne diseases like typhoid and malaria by almost half.

Yaoundé is a major hub for transport and education. Two large trans-African highways pass through the city. These include the Tripoli-Cape Town Highway and the Lagos-Mombasa Highway. The Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport serves as a major civilian hub. Education is bilingual because English and French are both official languages. The city hosts several universities, including the University of Yaoundé II. It also features many professional schools for doctors, engineers, and diplomats.

Culture and sports are very active in the capital. The city features many monuments, such as the Presidential Palace and the Reunification Monument.
