Yangzhou is a major prefecture-level city located in central Jiangsu Province, East China. It sits on the northern bank of the Yangtze River. The city is part of a large plain. It borders several other important areas. To the southwest lies the provincial capital, Nanjing. To the north is Huai'an. To the northeast is Yancheng. To the east is Taizhou. Across the Yangtze River to the south is Zhenjiang.

The city functions through a complex administrative system. Yangzhou administers six county-level divisions. These include three districts, two county-level cities, and one county. These divisions are further divided into 98 township-level units. This includes 87 towns and townships, plus 11 subdistricts. The urban area is a dense center of activity. It contains three urban districts. As of the 2020 census, the total population was 4,559,797. Within the urban area, 2,635,435 people live.

Waterways have shaped the development of Yangzhou for centuries. During the Spring and Autumn period, a leader named Fuchai of Wu built the Han Canal. He needed to improve supply lines for conflicts with Qi. By 486 BC, this canal connected the Yangtze River to the Huai River. Fuchai also built a fortress called Hancheng to protect the canal. This fortress was a square, roughly 3 li by 3 li. The canal acted as a moat on two sides. Later, the Sui dynasty connected various waterways. This created the core of the Grand Canal.

History has seen Yangzhou serve as a vital capital and trade hub. Under the Sui, the area was known as Yang Province. Emperor Yang later made the city, then called Jiangdu, the southern capital. During the Tang dynasty, it became a leading economic and cultural center. Many foreign merchants lived there, including Arabs and Persians. The city also served as a capital for the Wu Kingdom and the Song dynasty. However, the city faced sudden disasters. In 1280, a gunpowder explosion occurred at the Weiyang arsenal. The blast was felt 100 li away.

Cultural and religious diversity has left a lasting mark on the city. During the Yuan dynasty, an Italian trading family lived in the area. The 1342 discovery of Caterina Vilioni's tomb supports this. There is also evidence of a Nestorian Christian presence. The city has long hosted a Chinese Muslim community. You can see this history at the Crane Mosque. The tomb of Sayyid Puhaddin is another important site.

Yangzhou has faced significant periods of conflict and decline. During the 17th century, the city fell to Qing forces. This resulted in a violent massacre in 1645. In 1868, a riot occurred involving local scholars and foreign missionaries. This event almost caused a war between China and Britain. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the city suffered eight years of occupation. The Japanese used the area for internment camps. About 1,200 Allied civilians were held in these camps.

Today, Yangzhou is experiencing a period of renewed growth. After a time of decline, the 1990s brought new prosperity. National economic growth and development projects helped the city. The Grand Canal has been partially restored. Excellent rail and road connections now link the city to other regions. A railway connected Yangzhou to Nanjing in 2004. The city is also a leader in modern science. It is ranked among the top 200 cities globally for scientific research.
