Before they came to power, the country was often split. The interior lands were dry and had many different tribes. The coast was more connected to places like Persia. The Portuguese had also taken control of many coastal cities. The Ya'rubids changed all of this by bringing people together. They wanted to make Oman a strong and united land.

To unite the country, the first Imam used a clear plan. Nasir bin Murshid was elected as the first leader in 1624.

In 1633, they pushed the Portuguese out of Julfar. Later, in 1643, his army took the fort at Sohar. This helped the country become much more secure.

After Nasir, his cousin Sultan bin Saif became the next leader.

The Omani navy was very large and strong. They even sent ships to attack the coast of Gujarat. They also reached East Africa and stayed in places like Zanzibar. In 1660, they attacked Mombasa and fought at Fort Jesus.

One leader named Saif bin Sultan focused on the land too.

Saif bin Sultan lived in the castle of Rustaq. He was a very wealthy leader when he died in 1711. He owned many ships and many date trees.

Eventually, the dynasty began to lose its strength. A long struggle for power started after 1718. Different members of the family fought each other in a civil war.

The Ya'rubid dynasty was a powerful ruling family in Oman. They held the title of Imam, which meant they had both spiritual and political authority. They ruled from 1624 until 1742.

Before the Ya'rubids, Oman was often divided. The interior was a dry, sparsely populated area where different tribes frequently fought. The coastal regions were more connected to places like Persia and Mesopotamia. During this time, the Portuguese also controlled many important coastal cities like Muscat. The Ya'rubids changed Oman by uniting these divided groups under one government.

To achieve this unity, the first Imam, Nasir bin Murshid, was elected in 1624. He moved the capital to Nizwa to lead the country. He focused on building a strong army to remove the Portuguese from Omani shores. His forces captured important strongholds like the forts of Rustaq and Nakhal.

In 1633, his army drove the Portuguese out of Julfar. By 1643, they had also taken the fort at Sohar. These victories helped create a more stable and unified nation.

Following Nasir, his cousin Sultan bin Saif took over in 1649. He completed the mission of expelling the Portuguese from the coast. He captured several major cities, including Muscat and Sur. Under his leadership, Oman transformed into a major maritime power. This means they became very strong at sea and controlled much of the ocean trade.

The Omani navy grew so large that they even attacked Portuguese bases on the Gujarat coast in India. They also expanded their influence into East Africa, establishing settlements in places like Zanzibar and Mombasa.

One of the most influential leaders was Saif bin Sultan, who ruled from 1692 to 1711. He focused heavily on improving the land and its resources. He built aflaj, which are systems used to bring water to dry areas for farming. He also supported terracing, which is a way of making flat steps on hills to grow crops.

He planted many date palms in the Al Batinah Region to encourage people to live near the coast. Saif bin Sultan was incredibly wealthy. When he died in 1711, he reportedly owned 28 ships and one third of all the date trees in Oman.

During this era, the Omanis became a dominant force in the Indian Ocean. In 1696, they conducted a long siege of Fort Jesus in Mombasa. This siege lasted 33 months. Eventually, only thirteen people survived the famine and smallpox there before they surrendered.

Omani power even reached the Persian Gulf, where they took control of Bahrain from the Persians for several years. This era showed how a unified Oman could influence many different parts of the world.

However, the dynasty began to decline due to internal conflicts. After the death of Sultan bin Saif II in 1718, a massive succession struggle began. Different factions of the family fought over who should be the next Imam. This led to a long period of civil war involving many different leaders. For example, Muhammad bin Nasir and Khalf bin Mubarak fought for control, and both were eventually killed in an engagement at Sohar in 1728. These internal battles made the country much weaker and more vulnerable to outside forces.

The weakness from these civil wars allowed the Persians to intervene. In 1737, a Persian force arrived to assist one of the rival claimants. The Persian army marched through the interior, looting towns and taking many captives. This period of chaos continued for many years. By 1742, the Ya'rubid era was ending as new leaders like Ahmad bin Said began to take control. The dynasty's fall marked a major shift in Omani history and the rise of a new ruling house.
