The Workers' Party of Korea leads North Korea. It is a very old group. It started in 1949. It grew from two smaller parties.
For a long time, the Kim family has led the party. Kim Il Sung was the first great leader. He started the Juche idea. This idea says the nation must be independent.
Now, Kim Jong Un is the leader. He is the son of Kim Jong Il. He has made the party strong again. He uses "people-first politics" to lead. The party also controls the army. It is the main group in the government. Other small parties exist, but they must follow the Workers' Party.
The Workers' Party of Korea, or WPK, is the main ruling party in North Korea. It is the oldest active party in the country. The party holds a lot of power over the government. It also controls the Korean People's Army, which is the nation's armed forces. While two other legal parties exist, they must follow the WPK's leading role. This means the WPK stays in charge of how the country is run.
The party works through a system of rules and ideas. One major idea is Juche, which focuses on national independence. This philosophy says people should build their own nation through their own efforts. The party is also guided by Kimilsungism–Kimjongilism. This is a set of ideas from the country's past leaders. The party organizes itself using the Monolithic Ideological System. This system ensures that everyone follows the same core thoughts. The real power sits with the current supreme leader.
The history of the WPK began many years ago. In 1945, a branch of the Communist Party of Korea was set up. Kim Il Sung became a key leader during this early time. In 1946, the party merged with the New People's Party of Korea. This merger helped form the Workers' Party of North Korea. Later, in 1949, it merged again with the Workers' Party of South Korea. This final step created the Workers' Party of Korea we know today.
Many important events shaped the party over the decades. In 1950, Kim Il Sung launched the Korean War to unite the land. During the 1950s and 1960s, he removed rival groups from the party. This helped him become the sole leader. In 1980, he named his son, Kim Jong Il, as his successor. After Kim Il Sung died in 1994, his son took over. Kim Jong Il used a policy called Songun, which put the military first.
Today, Kim Jong Un is the leader of the WPK. He is the son of Kim Jong Il. Under his leadership, the party institutions have become strong again. In 2021, he introduced "people-first politics" as a new method. This replaced the older military-first rule. The party still aims to build a socialist society. They hope to make the country prosperous and civilized.
The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) is the ruling political party of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, often called North Korea. As the oldest active party in the country, it holds supreme authority over the state. The WPK controls the government and the Korean People's Army, which are the nation's armed forces. While two other political parties are legally allowed to exist, they must remain subservient to the WPK. They are required to accept the "leading role" of the WPK as a condition for their existence.
The party operates through a highly organized structure. The highest formal body is the party congress, though power is actually concentrated in the supreme leader. The WPK uses the Monolithic Ideological System to maintain unity. This system was conceived by Kim Yong-ju and Kim Jong Il. The party is guided by Kimilsungism–Kimjongilism, which is a synthesis of the ideas of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.
The history of the party began in 1945. On October 13, 1945, the North Korean Branch Bureau of the Communist Party of Korea was established. Kim Yong-bom served as its first chairman. However, Kim Il Sung replaced him two months later. In 1946, the group became the Communist Party of North Korea. It then merged with the New People's Party of Korea. This merger created the Workers' Party of North Korea (WPNK).
Leadership and power shifted significantly during the mid-20th century. In 1950, WPK leader Kim Il Sung launched the Korean War to militarily unite the Korean Peninsula. The war involved American intervention and Chinese intervention. Following the war, Kim Il Sung worked to decrease the influence of the Soviet Union and China within the party. He also removed rival factions from the WPK during the 1950s and 1960s. These groups included the domestic, Soviet, Yan'an, and guerrilla factions. By removing these rivals, Kim Il Sung consolidated his power and promoted a cult of personality.
Succession in the WPK has followed a hereditary pattern within the Kim family. At the 6th WPK Congress in 1980, Kim Il Sung announced his son, Kim Jong Il, as his successor. When Kim Il Sung died in 1994, Kim Jong Il took control. He governed as the chairman of the National Defence Commission. During his rule, he moved away from traditional communism. He implemented a policy called Songun, or military-first politics. This policy made the military the base of political power instead of the working class. This shift caused party institutions to weaken during his era.
After Kim Jong Il died in 2011, his son Kim Jong Un became the leader. Under Kim Jong Un, the party has seen a revival of its institutions. The influence of the military has decreased compared to the Songun era. In 2012, the fourth party conference amended rules to name Kimilsungism–Kimjongilism as the party's only guiding idea. In 2021, Kim Jong Un replaced Songun with "people-first politics." This new method reasserted the party's commitment to communism and its goal of building a socialist society.
The WPK remains a significant subject of international attention. It is currently banned in South Korea under the National Security Act. Additionally, the party and the state face sanctions from several international groups. These include the United Nations, the European Union, Australia, and the United States. The party's stated goal is to build a prosperous and civilized socialist society. They aim to realize independent development on a nationwide scale. The party continues to view the ruling Kim family as the ultimate source of its political thought.
