Halsey loved to learn new things. At age 52, he learned how to fly planes. He was the oldest person to do this in the Navy. He believed that planes on ships were the future. 
During World War II, Halsey led many ships. He was a very bold leader. He used a slogan: "Hit hard, hit fast, hit often." He led raids against targets in the Pacific. He also led the Third Fleet. One of his battles was the Battle of Leyte Gulf. This was a very big naval battle. It is one of the largest in history. Later, he became a five-star fleet admiral. This is a very high rank. He retired from the Navy in 1947.

One of the most interesting things about Halsey was his love for flying.

Halsey's early career involved serving on many different types of vessels. He sailed with the Great White Fleet from 1907 to 1909. During this time, he witnessed a tragic accident on a battleship. A powder charge ignited and caused a fire that killed 31 sailors.
In the years between the wars, Halsey changed his focus toward naval aviation. 

When World War II began in the Pacific, Halsey became a key leader. 

Halsey's leadership extended to the South Pacific theater. He served as the commander of the South Pacific Area during the Battle for Guadalcanal. 

Despite his success, the stress of command took a physical toll on Halsey. During his intense operations in 1942, he suffered from severe psoriasis. The condition caused intense itching and made sleeping nearly impossible. He became gaunt and lost significant weight. Because of this, he was ordered to a hospital in Hawaii. This occurred just before the critical Battle of Midway. Admiral Chester Nimitz had to appoint Rear Admiral Raymond Spruance to lead instead. 
Halsey's career concluded with the highest honors in the United States Navy. He was promoted to fleet admiral in December 1945.
